Benefits in the Netherlands: decision, objection and assistance

Which benefit route fits my situation?

A letter about a benefit may concern an award, termination, recovery of overpayments or a fine. Read exactly what the authority has decided and why. A telephone call for an explanation is not automatically a formal objection.

Which benefit route fits my situation?

Choose based on what changed, not just a benefit name. This is preparation, not an entitlement decision. Several situations may require several reports.

Lost work: WW

Record your first unemployed day, lost hours, contract end and availability for work. Check WW conditions and the official UWV application; dismissal alone does not grant benefit.

Sickness: wages or Ziektewet

Do you still have an employer, is your contract ending or do you receive WW? Record the first sick day. This determines where to report and whether continued wages or Ziektewet need assessment.

Long-term sickness: WIA

Record the first sick day and deadline in the UWV letter. Gather reintegration records. The ordinary WIA route follows prolonged illness; early application or postponement requires separate assessment.

Insufficient resources: social assistance

Record age, municipality, household, income and assets. The municipality assesses conditions and other possible benefits. Use its application route; there is no universal UWV application for social assistance.

Approaching AOW age

Check birth date, AOW age, country of residence and foreign work/residence periods. Apply to SVB, not UWV. Employer pension requires a separate check with the pension provider.

Partner died: Anw

Check death date, the partner’s insurance, your age, children and any disability. Apply for Anw to SVB. Survivor pension from an occupational pension scheme is separate.

WW nearly exhausted: IOW

Check age on the first unemployed day, WW start, exhausted duration and end decision. Apply for IOW through UWV if eligible; municipal IOAW is different. Earnings-related WGA requires a separate assessment.

Disability from a young age: Wajong?

Were you unable to work from a young age because of illness or disability? Wajong requires a lasting absence of work capacity and additional age, study and residence conditions. A diagnosis alone is not enough. Start with the work-capacity assessment; other outcomes may lead to municipal support.

Previous WAO or illness before 2004

WAO is not an alternative to a new WIA application. Check whether your first sick day was before 1 January 2004 and you remained ill, or whether you previously received WAO. A first application and restarting an earlier benefit are different routes; have your old UWV decision ready.

Self-employed and ill

Self-employment does not automatically insure you for Ziektewet or WIA. First check existing cover, your previous employment or benefit and when it ended. Voluntary UWV insurance often has a 13-week registration deadline, with additional conditions and exceptions. Becoming ill alone does not create insurance cover.

Check which period and reason are stated and compare the information used with your own information. Keep a substantive objection separate from a request for a payment arrangement.

Which documents are useful for assistance?

Bring the full decision, earlier correspondence and relevant employment or income information. Additional documents may be needed for a medical assessment; do not send them unsolicited to a general mailbox.

What can you do now?

  1. Determine which decision you want reviewed.
  2. Record which facts or assessment you dispute.
  3. Check the deadline and the correct submission route with the authority making the decision.

Have this information ready

  • The full decision and attachments.
  • Earlier applications, responses and confirmations of receipt.
  • Relevant information about employment and income.

When should you seek help quickly?

Is the response deadline almost over or is your income ending? Seek help immediately. A request for an explanation does not automatically extend the deadline.
