If your income rises, cancelling zorgtoeslag yourself is usually not the right step. Report your new annual income so Dienst Toeslagen can recalculate entitlement. First establish why you want to stop and which benefit year is involved.

1. Identify the change
Record what changed, when, and the benefit year concerned. Starting a job, finishing education or moving does not automatically mean Dutch healthcare benefit must stop. Check your current calculation in Mijn toeslagen and distinguish correcting information from voluntarily cancelling the benefit.
2. Report the correct annual income
If your income or your benefit partner’s income rises, report a revised estimate for the whole year through 'Wijziging doorgeven' in Mijn toeslagen. Do not enter only the new monthly salary: consider income already earned, holiday pay and benefits. Dienst Toeslagen reduces or stops payments if the recalculation requires it. Report the relevant change promptly and within four weeks at the latest.

3. Check assets on 1 January
For assets, the position on 1 January of the benefit year matters. If relevant assets already exceeded the limit then, report this within four weeks instead of cancelling yourself. An increase after 1 January does not by itself remove entitlement for that year; check the following year too. Use the correct year’s limit.
4. Check insurance and partner status
If you move in together and both receive zorgtoeslag, Dienst Toeslagen checks whether you become benefit partners and ends one payment where appropriate. Ensure address registration is correct and check the revised calculation. The service receives CAK information when Dutch health insurance ends. Have foreign or special insurance situations assessed separately; moving alone does not prove loss of entitlement.
5. Use the official cancellation route deliberately
If you still choose to cancel, select 'Toeslag stoppen' under 'Wijziging doorgeven' in Mijn toeslagen and answer the questions carefully. Check the year and effective date before submitting. No general cancellation letter is needed. If uncertain, contact the BelastingTelefoon or a benefits service point before ending a possible entitlement; never share your DigiD password.
6. Keep confirmation and check what follows
Save confirmation and check the new calculation and bank payments. After cancellation, payment usually ends the following month or the month after; a revised calculation usually arrives within five weeks. Cancelling does not erase overpayments. Must I cancel zorgtoeslag when my pay increases?
Report the revised annual income. Dienst Toeslagen recalculates entitlement and adjusts payment. If you cancel yourself, it may not automatically check later whether you were nevertheless entitled to an additional amount.
