IVA or WGA: how much WIA do I receive and for how long?

Under Dutch WIA, type, amount and duration depend on earning capacity, recovery prospects, work history and income. Being 80–100% incapacitated does not automatically mean IVA. Use the decision and payment statement; these percentages are not your personal net amount.

How to proceed

  1. Have your UWV decision and payment statement ready.

1. Read the benefit decision

WIA includes IVA and WGA. WGA applies at 35–80% incapacity and may also apply at 80–100% if recovery remains possible. IVA requires full and lasting incapacity. This concerns lost earning capacity, not just working hours. First applications and objections have separate routes; check the exact finding in your letter.

2. Check IVA rules

IVA is generally 75% of the WIA monthly wage, not automatically 75% of your last take-home pay. If circumstances remain unchanged it can continue to AOW age, but earlier cessation is possible. Reintegration is not compulsory; voluntary work may affect payment. UWV requires changes within one week after you knew or could have known about them.

3. Identify earnings-related WGA

Earnings-related WGA may apply if you worked 26 of the 36 weeks before first falling ill, or previously received WW. Without work income it is 75% of the WIA monthly wage for two months, then 70%; earnings are offset. This phase normally lasts three months to two years depending on work history. Previous WW may shorten it. This is not the maximum duration of all WGA.

4. Check the following phase

Without or after that phase UWV assesses a wage supplement or follow-up benefit. For partial incapacity, earning at least half the assessed remaining capacity matters; WGA 80–100 has different conditions. The supplement accounts for actual earnings or assessed capacity. The follow-up benefit uses a percentage of minimum wage, or the lower WIA monthly wage. UWV checks monthly; do not assume a universal 70% of former pay.

5. Check net payment and timing

Mijn UWV payment statements explain gross amount, tax, offsets and net payment. UWV pays in arrears near month-end; use its current calendar, not a fixed assumption of the 23rd. UWV says banks usually need another three working days. Holiday pay arrives in May. Check statement and bank first, and promptly contact UWV about an incorrect amount.

6. Report errors and changes

Record decision date, phase end, income and health changes. Report changes securely to UWV; do not place medical records in our chat. Objections follow the decision’s route and deadline; asking for clarification does not stop it. Seek help with income gaps and consider a possible UWV supplement. Our preparation neither selects nor applies for a benefit.

Does all WGA stop after two years?

No. Two years is the maximum earnings-related phase; previous WW may shorten it. A wage supplement or follow-up benefit may then apply. Check your transition letter and earnings.
