Detailed explanation, checklist and sources

This plan helps you check the relevant Dutch social-assistance rule, collect the right documents and use your municipality’s official route.

1. Identify the social-assistance rule

While entitlement to Dutch general social assistance has not yet been established, the municipality must provide an advance as an interest-free loan within four weeks of the application and then at intervals of no more than four weeks. Since 1 January 2026 it is at least 95% of the applicable general assistance: the assistance standard minus income that must be taken into account. Exceptions apply if you culpably fail to supply necessary information or evidence, provide it late or incompletely, cooperate insufficiently, or it is already clear on application that you have no entitlement.

2. Check your personal situation

This guidance concerns Dutch general social assistance under the Participatiewet. The municipality assesses your personal situation and may use its own form or portal.

3. Collect the decisive information

Read the complete letter or application confirmation. Note the assessed period and prepare only the data needed for this social-assistance question.

4. Use the official municipal route

Keep the application date and receipt, supply requested documents and report income. Ask the municipality to assess and calculate the advance, explaining if missing documents are not your fault. The advance may later be offset against awarded assistance; repayment may follow if entitlement is absent or lower. Report urgent lack of money immediately. If under 27, also establish whether a search period applies and what the official application date is.

5. Check exceptions and changes

A notification, a new application and an objection are different steps. For a decision, always check the remedy and deadline in your own letter.

6. Keep proof and seek timely help

Keep proof of sending and receipt with your records. Seek timely help if income stops, several people count or the municipality uses different facts.

What can I do now in practice?

Keep the application date and receipt, supply requested documents and report income. Ask the municipality to assess and calculate the advance, explaining if missing documents are not your fault. The advance may later be offset against awarded assistance; repayment may follow if entitlement is absent or lower. Report urgent lack of money immediately. If under 27, also establish whether a search period applies and what the official application date is. Use your own municipality’s form, portal or contact channel. This website files nothing, calculates no individual entitlement and does not replace an objection to a decision.
