How do I claim a UWV death payment?
What would you like help with?
Detailed explanation, checklist and sources
The benefit stops on death. An eligible survivor may receive a one-off payment after benefits such as Ziektewet, WIA, WAO, WAZ or Wajong. Wait for UWV's letter and follow its application route; being an heir alone is insufficient.

1. Your situation
Check the benefit and paying institution. This concerns UWV, not the separate SVB process for AOW/Anw. A Dutch municipality automatically reports death to UWV. If the deceased lived outside the Netherlands, contact UWV yourself.
2. Conditions
UWV applies priority: partner first; otherwise minor children; without either, family members registered at the same BRP address. An ordinary housemate or heir does not automatically qualify. Let UWV assess the relationship and circumstances.
3. Preparation
UWV treats a spouse as partner if they were not permanently separated. For unmarried cohabitants it lists a cohabitation contract or registered partnership, shared children, a former marriage to each other, or sharing household costs. Keep appropriate evidence and state the actual relationship.
4. Apply
After receiving the death notification, UWV sends a letter to the deceased's address. Apply only after receiving it, through the indicated Mijn UWV route. UWV assesses entitlement within four weeks. Contact UWV if the letter is missing or you cannot apply; do not use the deceased's login.
5. Decision
The one-off amount equals one month of the deceased's gross benefit and is free of tax and contributions. UWV also pays accrued holiday allowance. Benefit overpaid after death is deducted from the death payment and holiday allowance. Check the payment breakdown.
6. Next steps
When UWV asks for bank details, use Opvragen rekeningnummer overlijdensuitkering. If benefit was paid to the employer, use the different Betalen overlijdensuitkering form. Keep the letter, application, bank details and decision. For the annual statement contact UWV with the deceased's BSN; follow decision instructions for disputes.
Does every heir receive this payment?
No. UWV applies specific priority for partner, minor children and then certain family members at the same BRP address. Inheritance entitlement is different.
