These are separate DUO schemes. Missing-grant compensation is often automatic, but people who never received student finance must apply. Voucher compensation requires no application or new course.

1. Your situation
Missing grant: at least twelve months of performance-grant entitlement under the 2015–2023 loan system, including supplementary grant/travel within that period. Extra travel months after the grant do not count. A recognised bachelor, master or Ad must be completed within ten years plus approved extension. Tuition-credit-only/lifelong-learning-credit-only entitlement does not qualify.
2. Conditions
For a diploma obtained in 2026: €35.31 per eligible month;2025 or earlier €34.17. Normally at most four years, with extra months possible for a longer master or approved grant extension. Shorter diplomas can limit duration: Ad at most 24 months, three-year bachelor without master generally 36. Multiple diplomas do not duplicate the same months.
3. Preparation
Previous student finance plus diploma: automatic notice. Without previous finance, apply in Mijn DUO or use Aanvraag tegemoetkoming gemiste basisbeurs if login fails. Prove study between September 2015 and September 2023, nationality conditions and additional overseas-study conditions if applicable. Send a certified foreign diploma copy; equivalence must be assessed.
4. Apply
Voucher rules differ: first bachelor-finance month September 2015–August 2019, completed hbo bachelor or university bachelor plus master within ten years plus extension, and unused voucher value. No new course is needed since 1 September 2023. Full 2026 amount: €2,167.34; partially used vouchers yield only remaining value. Notice is automatic after graduation; send certified foreign diplomas if not already provided.
5. Decision
Both first offset student debt. No debt or remaining balance: payment within seven weeks of notice. DUO automatically notifies any possible lower monthly repayment. Check eligible months, diploma, previous voucher use, debt and bank details; follow objection instructions for errors.
6. Next steps
Not income, but paid money can raise assets affecting box 3, benefits, municipal schemes or CAK contributions. Ask the relevant institution. On 19 October 2026, DUO still describes extra compensation expected from April 2027 as a proposal needing Senate approval. Do not count it as an existing entitlement.
Must I study again to receive voucher value?
No. Since 1 September 2023 this is money, not a course voucher. Entry, diploma and remaining-value requirements still apply.
