1. Identify the social-assistance rule
Apply through your municipality or werk.nl. Assistance normally starts on the application date; since 2026 a municipality may award up to three months retrospectively in an individual case, but this is not automatic. The usual decision period is eight weeks and missing documents may pause it.
2. Check your personal situation
This guidance concerns Dutch general social assistance under the Participatiewet. The municipality assesses your personal situation and may use its own form or portal.
3. Collect the decisive information
Read the complete letter or application confirmation. Note the assessed period and prepare only the data needed for this social-assistance question.
4. Use the official municipal route
Submit promptly through the official route. Keep the confirmation, provide requested documents on time and ask how the municipality assesses any retrospective award.
5. Check exceptions and changes
A notification, a new application and an objection are different steps. For a decision, always check the remedy and deadline in your own letter.
6. Keep proof and seek timely help
Keep proof of sending and receipt with your records. Seek timely help if income stops, several people count or the municipality uses different facts.
7. Check the under 27 route
Under 27 normally requires four weeks of documented job or education search first. An award may also cover that search period. With a cohabiting partner aged 27 or older you may apply immediately, but your own search duty remains. The municipality may waive the waiting period for vulnerable young people, such as disability, debts or homelessness. Ages 18–20 have a lower rate and parents owe maintenance until 21; inadequate parental resources, deceased parents or a seriously disrupted relationship may allow a supplement, potentially recovered from parents. Ages 21–26 have no separate youth rate; recent education leavers may temporarily receive less. Ask for assessment, not an automatic exemption.
8. Arrange registration without a permanent home
Assistance may be possible without a permanent home. Arrange BRP registration and a correspondence address with the municipality; a rented home is not the same requirement as a correspondence address. With an address or temporary shelter apply in your municipality. Without an address or available shelter, including stays across municipalities, a centre municipality can explain the route. Report actual stays and urgent hardship immediately. On returning to assistance within one year the municipality may reuse previous application data. A valid driving licence can identify you when applying.
9. First check whether general assistance fits
General social assistance requires, among other things, living in the Netherlands, age 18 or over and an eligible residence status. Income and assets must be insufficient; another available benefit or detention may exclude entitlement. Partners’ combined income and assets count. Record age, household, residence status, income, possessions and other benefit possibilities. The municipality decides entitlement; an application is not an award.
What can I do now in practice?
Submit promptly through the official route. Keep the confirmation, provide requested documents on time and ask how the municipality assesses any retrospective award. Use your own municipality’s form, portal or contact channel. This website files nothing, calculates no individual entitlement and does not replace an objection to a decision.

For each event, note the date, what happened and where the evidence is kept. Example: 3 October — letter received — correspondence folder.
Describe the solution you would like, such as an explanation of a deduction and repayment of the outstanding amount.
