How much Dutch child benefit will I receive, and when?
What would you like help with?
Detailed explanation, checklist and sources
Dutch kinderbijslag is paid per child, quarterly in arrears. The child’s age on the first day of that quarter determines the age band. Eligibility comes first; registering your first child’s birth is not itself an application.

1. Check eligibility and circumstances
Kinderbijslag concerns children under 18. You must be insured, usually through living or working in the Netherlands. Ages 16–17 have education, basic-qualification or exemption conditions. Living abroad, shared parenting and special care require separate SVB checks.
2. Choose the correct quarterly amount
Ordinary amounts per child for quarters three and four of 2026 are: ages 0–5 €298.40; 6–11 €362.35; 12–17 €426.29. These are quarterly, not monthly amounts. Do not automatically use them for 2027 or special cases.
3. Check age on the reference date
Check age on 1 January, 1 April, 1 July or 1 October. A child turning six on 2 October stays in the youngest band for quarter four. Birth on a quarter’s first day may allow entitlement that quarter; a later birth starts the following quarter, subject to eligibility.
4. Check the payment date
SVB lists 4 January 2027 for payment of quarter four of 2026. This is not a January benefit amount. The bank determines when the credit appears; foreign accounts may take longer. Consult the official calendar for other quarters.
5. Make the first application
For a first child in the Netherlands, register the child with the municipality and follow the SVB letter to apply through Mijn SVB. Contact SVB if no message arrives within six weeks. SVB normally adjusts existing benefit automatically for a subsequent registered child.
6. Investigate a missing or different payment
Compare the decision, paid quarter, age at quarter start and bank account. Keep submission confirmation and a bank statement ready; ask SVB about discrepancies. Payment after an eighteenth birthday may cover the previous quarter. Our help-request route supports preparation; this checklist submits nothing.
7. Which education counts at ages 16 and 17?
Without a basic qualification, the child attends daytime education. HAVO, VWO or MBO level 2 or higher, including BBL/BOL, qualifies; child benefit may continue after that qualification. Exemption may apply for an appropriate programme after practical school, special education, disability or a compulsory-education exemption. Student finance or a DUO travel product does not itself end child benefit. Residence abroad has separate requirements concerning daytime education, vocational qualification or inability due to illness/disability. SVB specifies €540 quarterly maintenance for a child living away from home; keep payment evidence and obtain an assessment.
8. Earlier quarters and foreign payments
For Q1/Q2 2026, amounts for ages 0–5, 6–11 and 12–17 were €295.07, €358.30 and €421.53 respectively. The calendar lists Q1/Q2/Q3 2027 payments on 1 April, 1 July and 4 October 2027; it does not confirm 2027 amounts. Foreign payments usually go in euros through Citibank, with transfer costs up to €0.48 per payment and possible own-bank charges. For Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Morocco, New Zealand, the United States and South Africa, SVB pays in local currency; check the official exchange rate and payment date.
My child turned six this month. Does the amount immediately rise?
Not automatically. Age on the first day of the relevant quarter determines the band; payment follows after that quarter ends.
