When and how can I apply for Dutch orphan benefit?
What would you like help with?
Detailed explanation, checklist and sources
SVB orphan benefit generally concerns someone whose last parent died while insured under Anw. Extra conditions apply from 16, and payment always stops at 21. A representative applies under 18; adults apply themselves.

1. Am I an orphan for this scheme?
Both biological or adoptive parents must have died, or a special case applies: the other parent never acknowledged you and is not registered, or is officially registered as long-term missing. A living registered parent who is uninvolved or lacks parental authority does not make you an orphan for this scheme.
2. Was the deceased parent insured?
The last parent to die must have been Anw-insured on the date of death. Living or working in the Netherlands usually means insurance, but exceptions exist. Gather residence and employment countries and ask SVB to assess; a death certificate alone does not establish entitlement.
3. Which education conditions apply?
Up to 15 there are no additional age conditions. At 16/17, attend daytime education towards a basic qualification, have an exemption, or continue full-time daytime education after qualification. At 18–20 the education route requires full-time daytime education. Payment always ends at 21.
4. Can household care qualify?
As an alternative at 16–20, household care can qualify. You need a basic qualification or exemption, spend more than half your time caring for a household containing another child receiving orphan benefit, and not be married or cohabiting with someone else. Merely helping at home is insufficient.
5. Who applies and receives payment?
Under 18, a guardian, carer, administrator or institution can apply and receive the payment. From 18 you apply and receive it yourself through age 20 if conditions are met. Coordinate representation and bank details.
6. How do I submit?
Download the official SVB form, complete, print and sign it. Post to the current address on the SVB page or upload the completed form in Mijn SVB. If downloading is impossible, request a paper copy. Living abroad has a separate route: establish that first. Keep the application and receipt and respond to questions.
My father is alive but has no parental authority. Am I an orphan after my mother dies?
Not solely for that reason. SVB does not treat a child as an orphan merely because a living registered parent has no authority or contact. Ask for assessment if registration is unclear.
