Detailed explanation, checklist and sources

A student caring for a child under 18 without a partner may qualify if student-finance conditions are met. Submit the official form through Mijn DUO. The supplement is not a gift in every study phase.

1. Your situation

Check partner status: living together may count as partnership. The child need not be your own. You receive child benefit or the child is registered at your address; shared parenting can allow an exception. Ask DUO if unsure.

2. Conditions

The monthly amount is €327.15 in 2026 and €337.82 in 2027. It starts after the birth month, or in that month for a birth on the first. Backdating is possible within the academic year. Gather birth, address, child-benefit and study details.

3. Preparation

Complete Aanvragen en wijzigen toeslag verzorging kind and scan/photograph it. In Mijn DUO choose Mijn producten → Studiefinanciering → Toeslag verzorging kind → Aanvragen and upload. If you have no student finance, apply first and arrange the supplement together.

4. Apply

Mbo 1/2: while entitled to student finance. Mbo 3/4: while basic grant is available, normally four years, specialist courses two extra. Higher education: normally four years, longer for specified longer courses/masters/teacher training. Previous finance months, even loan-only or travel-only months, reduce the duration.

5. Decision

Mbo 1/2 is a gift. Mbo 3/4, Ad and higher education require a diploma within ten years: normally four years become a gift, Ad two, officially longer courses more. Without a diploma repayment applies. Afterwards up to three extra years as an interest-bearing loan while full-time enrolled; loans always remain repayable with interest.

6. Next steps

Check the decision, remaining months and grant/loan status. If you acquire a partner or child benefit stops, stop the supplement in Mijn DUO; discuss address/shared-parenting changes promptly. Ask your study adviser about combining care and study. Keep receipt and follow objection instructions for errors.

Is the supplement always free?

No. Mbo 1/2 is a gift. Higher levels have diploma requirements, and later only an extra interest-bearing loan may be available.
