When can I receive Ziektewet and how do I arrange it?

Illness does not automatically entitle you to Dutch Ziektewet. Employees usually receive continued wages; UWV assesses insured safety-net cases. Contract, first sick day and any WW determine the reporting route.

1. Identify the payer
Report sickness to your employer while employed. Continued wages usually apply; pregnancy/childbirth, organ donation or a no-risk policy may create a separate Ziektewet route. Having no employer is not itself insurance or entitlement. Check each job/benefit if combined.
2. Sick at or after contract end?
If your contract ends while sick, your employer reports to UWV on its last day, or the next working day after a weekend/public holiday. Check reporting. If sick within four weeks after contract end without WW yet, call UWV by the second sick day. UWV assesses entitlement; contract end does not reset the full benefit period.
3. Sick during WW?
During WW, report by the second day through Mijn UWV or its app. WW usually continues for thirteen sickness weeks; pregnancy/childbirth, organ donation or WW ending may lead to earlier Ziektewet assessment. Also notify your employer if working. Continue income reports and reintegration agreements.
4. Check special situations
Agency, on-call and zero-hour work depend on contract and circumstances. Self-employment without applicable insurance gives no automatic Ziektewet entitlement; voluntarily insured people call UWV by the second sick day. AOW, foreign insurance and employer self-insurance need separate checks. Ask promptly which reports apply.
5. Understand amount and duration
Usually it is 70% of capped daily earnings, not 70% of last net pay. Pregnancy/childbirth-related illness or organ donation may give 100%; no-risk and other schemes differ. Income can reduce payment. Net appears on the statement. Maximum 104 weeks is not guaranteed; earlier sickness and assessments matter, and AOW rules differ.
6. Keep evidence and meet duties
Keep contract, first sick date, confirmation, wage/WW details and decision. Answer UWV on time and follow recovery, income and reintegration duties. Query missing reports/payments directly. For a disputed decision immediately check its objection route and deadline. Our help prepares questions and submits no sickness report.
Do I always get two years after my contract ends?
No. UWV assesses insurance and conditions. Earlier sickness can count and entitlement may end sooner. Use the existing specific objection route for a termination decision, not a new claim as a substitute.
