Applying for Wajong: how do I prepare for the assessment?
What would you like help with?
Detailed explanation, checklist and sources
Apply using UWV’s work capacity assessment application. A new Wajong benefit requires permanently absent work capacity and the other conditions. A diagnosis alone does not decide the outcome. Gather your timeline and education and support records and use the official form.

1. Check the relevant Wajong route
This concerns a new application under Wajong 2015, not automatically continuation of older Wajong entitlements. UWV must establish that you lack work capacity now and in the future. If you can work with support, the banenafspraak scheme, sheltered work or municipal assistance may fit better. Use UWV’s selection aid if unsure; our preparation does not award a benefit.
2. Record age, education and residence
Record when difficulties began: on or before your 18th birthday, or before age 30 with at least six months of education during the preceding year. Normally you lived in the Netherlands when the conditions were met. UWV also identifies an exception for residence in the EU, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Switzerland at the relevant time; have international facts assessed. You can apply from six months before turning 18.
3. Describe everyday functioning
Create a timeline of everyday activities, support, education, placements and attempts to work. Describe what you can do, for how long and with what help. UWV assesses four conditions together: being able to perform a task in a work organisation; keeping agreements and understanding, remembering and following instructions; working continuously for at least one hour; and doing an activity for at least four hours a day, or working two hours a day while being able to earn at least the minimum hourly wage. A diagnosis alone does not decide this. Wajong also requires work capacity to be permanently absent. Gather relevant school, placement and support reports and follow the separate form instructions for medical information.
4. Use Mijn UWV or the official form
Go from uwv.nl to Aanvraag beoordeling arbeidsvermogen in Mijn UWV. If that is not possible, use the linked PDF or ask UWV for a copy. Read the required-information list first. A helper uses DigiD Machtigen where needed, not your password; you sign personally. Under 18, your legal representative completes and signs with you following UWV instructions. This site sends nothing.
5. Check receipt and missing information
Keep a copy, sending evidence and acknowledgement. Check its next steps and decision date; a general waiting time is not a guarantee. If acknowledgement is missing or UWV requests additions, contact UWV and record the specific deadline. Prepare brief examples for an interview and ask beforehand how a supporter can help. Send medical data only through UWV’s designated route, never in public messages.
6. Consider the decision and further help
Read whether UWV finds work capacity or potential to develop it and which conditions determine the result. If you disagree, follow the objection route and deadline in the decision; a new application does not automatically replace that. If you have work capacity, discuss employment support or possible social assistance with the municipality. Our assistance request can support preparation for a next step; it does not automatically take over or file your case.
Is a diagnosis enough for Wajong?
No. UWV assesses work capacity, whether it could develop and the remaining Wajong conditions. Also describe practical functioning and needed help. You are not expected to make the final medical or legal assessment yourself.

For each event, note the date, what happened and where the evidence is kept. Example: 3 October — letter received — correspondence folder.
Describe the solution you would like, such as an explanation of a deduction and repayment of the outstanding amount.
For example: which document is missing, who can provide it and what should I do first?
