How do I get a WIA advance while a decision is late?

1. Identify the income gap
This concerns an advance while a first Dutch WIA application remains undecided. Record the application date, expected WIA start and actual end of wages or Ziektewet. An advance does not establish WIA entitlement. It differs from a WW advance and a final WIA award. Continued wages and other income must be taken into account by UWV.
2. Contact UWV at the right time
For a first application, UWV says it calls at least two weeks before the expected start after 104 illness weeks. If nothing has been heard one week before that date, call about a possible advance. Explain the threatened income gap and check what is still needed. After sixteen weeks without a WIA decision you can ask about the application’s status; this does not guarantee that every decision or advance is ready then.
3. Understand amount and payer
UWV discusses whether you want an advance and estimates it from the expected WIA benefit. Other income is considered; there is no fixed percentage or guaranteed net amount. The advance stops when WIA is decided. If the employer bears its own WGA risk, UWV says it is responsible for paying during this period and providing reintegration support. Confirm who pays and keep the arrangements.
4. Report income and changes
Report income and changes immediately through the official UWV channel, even if you think UWV already knows. Keep proof and check processing. Excess advances caused by income not taken into account can be recovered. Detention, moving abroad or entitlement to another benefit can also affect entitlement. Ask UWV how your change affects the advance rather than deciding this yourself.
5. Apply for WW after refusal
If WIA is refused, UWV says always apply for WW and follow instructions promptly. UWV must assess WW eligibility and can offset an award against the advance. Assuming you cannot receive WW and not applying is risky: failure to apply can mean repayment. A WIA objection does not replace a WW application or automatically stop other deadlines.
6. Check offsetting and repayment
An awarded WIA or WW benefit is offset against the advance through arrears. Without WIA, WW and other income, UWV says repayment is usually unnecessary, not guaranteed. WW refusal because unemployment is your fault, or excess advances from unaccounted income, can instead require repayment. Read any recovery letter, period and calculation and check Mijn UWV. Seek timely help with incorrect facts and follow objection instructions; discuss a payment arrangement if needed. Our help request files nothing and suspends nothing.
Is a WIA advance never repayable?
There is no blanket exemption. UWV lists unaccounted income, not applying for WW after WIA refusal, and WW refusal for culpable unemployment among repayment situations. No WIA or WW and no other income usually means no repayment according to UWV. Have your specific decision checked.
