1. Identify the social-assistance rule
From the application onward you must report relevant changes such as work and income, inheritance or assets, study or volunteering, moving, living together or separating, children moving in or out, and holidays. Since 2026 gifts need reporting only above the €1,200 yearly total, but you must track them.
2. Check your personal situation
This guidance concerns Dutch general social assistance under the Participatiewet. The municipality assesses your personal situation and may use its own form or portal.
3. Collect the decisive information
Read the complete letter or application confirmation. Note the assessed period and prepare only the data needed for this social-assistance question.
4. Use the official municipal route
Report relevant changes immediately through the official channel. State the effective date and attach suitable proof; correct an incomplete earlier report promptly and keep both confirmations.
5. Check exceptions and changes
A notification, a new application and an objection are different steps. For a decision, always check the remedy and deadline in your own letter.
6. Keep proof and seek timely help
Keep proof of sending and receipt with your records. Seek timely help if income stops, several people count or the municipality uses different facts.
7. Check work duties, exemptions and holidays
Assistance also provides municipal support towards work or participation. You generally must accept and retain offered work, maintain skills, cooperate with reintegration and register with an employment agency if requested. Searching before relocation, up to three hours' daily travel and possibly moving may matter; have legal conditions and your circumstances checked. No work-duty reduction is allowed without blameworthiness. Single parents fully caring for a child under 5 may request exemption, but reintegration still matters; for children under 12 suitable childcare is required to accept work. Informal care may justify temporary exemption; full permanent incapacity removes the work duty. Cooperate with necessary investigation and identification, but ask about grounds and rights for a home visit. Report and discuss holidays beforehand, even within the Netherlands; maximum 28 days annually including weekends and public holidays with payment under applicable rules.

8. Correct errors and separate repayment from fines
Incorrect or incomplete data may cause reassessment, termination and repayment, including earlier periods. A fine requires separate assessment of blame, seriousness, circumstances and ability to pay; not every error is intentional. Statutory starting points distinguish 100% for intent,75% gross negligence,50% ordinary and 25% reduced culpability, subject to proportionality and legal caps. Recurrence may increase the basis to 150%, so 'never more than repayment' is not a safe general rule. No culpability means no fine. A warning may be possible for no loss or at most€150, or voluntary correction before discovery within a reasonable maximum 60 days; this is no right to wait, and an earlier warning may prevent it. Correct promptly with evidence and check each decision and objection notice.

What can I do now in practice?
Report relevant changes immediately through the official channel. State the effective date and attach suitable proof; correct an incomplete earlier report promptly and keep both confirmations. Use your own municipality’s form, portal or contact channel. This website files nothing, calculates no individual entitlement and does not replace an objection to a decision.
