How do I report income alongside Dutch social assistance?

What would you like help with?

Read the full explanation · View sources

Your next step on the official website

Prepare here, then go to the appropriate authority.

This official route starts with Dutch guidance.

How to proceed

  1. Prepare payslips, the period worked and payment dates; do not deduct a possible income exemption yourself.
  2. Ask your municipality how and when to report income. Keep the report and check the subsequent calculation.

After signing in or opening a further form, you may encounter Dutch text. The official link opens in a new tab. Keep this guidance beside the form.

Detailed explanation, checklist and sources

This plan helps you check the relevant Dutch social-assistance rule, collect the right documents and use your municipality’s official route.

On this page

1. Identify the social-assistance rule

Employment income and other resources may be offset because assistance tops income up to the applicable standard. The duty to provide information starts with the application. Since 2026 people under 27 may under conditions have 15% of monthly salary disregarded; let the municipality apply this rather than deducting it yourself.

2. Check your personal situation

This guidance concerns Dutch general social assistance under the Participatiewet. The municipality assesses your personal situation and may use its own form or portal.

3. Collect the decisive information

Read the complete letter or application confirmation. Note the assessed period and prepare only the data needed for this social-assistance question.

4. Use the official municipal route

Report gross and net pay, work period and payment date through the municipal form. Attach a payslip or proof and check the later calculation for period and amount.

5. Check exceptions and changes

A notification, a new application and an objection are different steps. For a decision, always check the remedy and deadline in your own letter.

6. Keep proof and seek timely help

Keep proof of sending and receipt with your records. Seek timely help if income stops, several people count or the municipality uses different facts.

7. Distinguish income and exemptions

Not every receipt is deducted: child benefit, child budget, housing/healthcare/childcare allowances and a pgb for buying care are excluded. That pgb differs from wages you receive as a carer. Minor children's employment earnings, interest on assets/savings and certain bonuses/expense reimbursements are also excluded. Spousal and child maintenance do count as income. For damages the municipality assesses purpose and nature; legally designated compensation cannot be deducted. Request an itemised assessment rather than assuming everything exempt.

8. Prepare the move into work

Before starting part-time or other work, ask your municipal adviser to map wages, remaining benefit, allowances, payment dates and a fallback route. Simpel Switchen is a collaborative programme, not a benefit or automatic return guarantee. It also supports transitions between day activities, education, care and employment and back if needed. Municipalities can use the fast-application/decision and part-time-work toolkits; professionals can use Nibud's benefit-to-work calculator. Wajong fallback until AOW age is a separate UWV scheme, not automatically social assistance. Separate planning from formal applications.

What can I do now in practice?

Report gross and net pay, work period and payment date through the municipal form. Attach a payslip or proof and check the later calculation for period and amount. Use your own municipality’s form, portal or contact channel. This website files nothing, calculates no individual entitlement and does not replace an objection to a decision.
