1. Identify benefit, year and application history
Record whether you want healthcare or rent benefit, the year and the exact months. Check Mijn toeslagen to see whether you already received it, cancelled it or received a refusal. A person who never applied does not automatically use the same procedure as someone seeking correction of an existing assessment. Keep decisions and any cancellation confirmation.
2. Check the ordinary deadline
A first application for 2025 is still possible through 31 December 2026. The ordinary deadline for 2024 has passed; do not assume a general five-year back-claim right. Five-year review concerns an existing decision, not every first application. Childcare benefit is outside this explanation and has a much shorter retrospective application window.
3. Check an approved tax-filing extension
If you or your benefit partner received an income-tax filing extension for the relevant year, you may apply until that extension ends. For rent benefit, a co-resident’s extension can also matter. Check the actual approval and tax year; simply filing a tax return late does not establish an approved extension.
4. Check eligibility in the earlier year
Use the conditions and income and asset limits for the year claimed. Gather annual income, partner details and relevant assets on 1 January. Healthcare benefit also depends on insurance and age; rent benefit depends on the home, rent, residents and monthly registration. The more favourable 2026 rent rules do not automatically apply to 2025. Use the official estimator for the earlier year.
5. Choose the procedure matching your situation
Submit an in-time first application through Mijn toeslagen for the correct period. If you previously cancelled a benefit, a review request concerning that cancellation may be needed after the ordinary deadline; this concerns the cancellation year, not automatically later years. Follow the official letter instructions and have timing and evidence checked. A refused application may require an objection: read the decision immediately. Do not use one generic application letter for these different procedures.
6. Check receipt and the current year
Keep confirmation, submitted information and the calculation. For past years, payment may await a final assessment; do not assume immediate payment. Dienst Toeslagen says a healthcare-benefit claim for 2025 also applies for 2026, so check current income and entitlement and report changes. Can I always claim five years of healthcare benefit?
No. The ordinary first-application deadline differs from review of an existing decision. For 2025 the ordinary deadline is 31 December 2026. Earlier cancellation or an approved tax extension may change the route; have the year and decision checked.
