How do I stop Dutch student finance and the student travel product?

Arrange both steps yourself: stop student finance by the first day of the month without entitlement, and remove a loaded student travel product by the tenth day. You may no longer use it from the first day. Deregistering from your course is a separate step.

1. Confirm the official deregistration date
This guidance concerns Dutch student finance when graduating or leaving a course. Ask the institution for your official deregistration date: the last class or thesis submission is not automatically that date. Use DUO's change guide to identify the first month without entitlement.
2. Stop finance in Mijn DUO
Stop finance in Mijn DUO by the first day of the month in which you no longer may or wish to receive it. After that day, you can stop only from the following month. Check every component and retain the confirmed start date.
3. Remove the loaded travel product
If travel entitlement has ended, do not use the student travel product from the first day of that month. Remove it at a collection machine by the tenth day. Check removal at the machine and the confirmation in Mijn DUO the next day.
4. Check lost cards and unused products
A product never loaded onto your card does not need removal at a machine. For a lost, broken or expired card, follow the Studentenreisproduct customer-service procedure. If you never started studying but loaded the product, stop it before the first month finance would begin.
5. Check pauses and special circumstances
To save entitlement months, stop all finance components and the travel product by the first day; merely not travelling saves no months. You can restart finance only while you are still under thirty. Illness or leaving in the first year can involve special rules; ask DUO to assess them.
6. Keep three separate confirmations
Keep deregistration, finance cancellation and travel-product removal separately. Record dates and remaining actions below; this local document does nothing at DUO. Check unexpected payments or travel debts against the decision letter and request suitable assistance for a dispute.
Can I still travel free until the tenth day?
No. Without entitlement you cannot use the student travel product from the first day of that month. The tenth day is the administrative removal deadline for the loaded product. Saving entitlement months instead requires stopping by the first day.
