How do I apply for ZEZ as a self-employed pregnant person?
What would you like help with?
Detailed explanation, checklist and sources
A pregnant self-employed person may qualify for Dutch ZEZ from UWV. Apply four to two weeks before the requested start date. Your work category, dates, hours and income determine the information needed.

1. Check whether ZEZ fits your work
This concerns the Dutch Self-employed and Pregnant scheme, ZEZ. Check that on the day before benefit starts you fall within an eligible category, such as an entrepreneur, independent professional or partner working in a business. UWV specifies particular categories for director-major shareholders, personal-budget carers and domestic workers. Chamber of Commerce registration alone does not prove every condition is met.

2. Choose the start and application window
Count back from the day after the expected delivery date. Choose a start between six and four weeks before that day, or ten and eight weeks for a multiple pregnancy. Apply four to two weeks before the chosen start. Benefit lasts at least sixteen weeks, or twenty for multiples. The actual birth can affect the end date; do not treat your own fixed end-date calculation as guaranteed.
3. Prepare evidence and information
Prepare your BSN, expected delivery date, tax-return income, hours worked and replacement arrangements. Keep the pregnancy certificate; UWV may request it up to a year after benefit ends. Support your hours and work category with records. If figures are missing or you recently started, explain this and follow the UWV questions instead of presenting uncertain estimates as established facts.
4. Understand the calculation
With at least 1,225 self-employed hours in the preceding calendar year, UWV states benefit at minimum-wage level. With fewer hours, profit or income is assessed, including a higher five-year average where applicable. Starters, assisting partners and domestic workers have particular calculation rules. Fewer than 1,225 hours therefore does not automatically mean no ZEZ. This page does not calculate an individual award.

5. Use the correct official application
Use UWV’s official ZEZ application, not a general letter. If voluntarily insured for Ziektewet with UWV, call about maternity benefit; a ZEZ supplement may also be possible. If you also have employment, the employer applies for that separate benefit. Overlap may reduce ZEZ. Declare replacement through an employment or intermediary agency, as UWV may pay that agency.

6. Check the decision and changes
Keep confirmation: UWV states this arrives within two weeks of applying, with a decision usually within two weeks after the requested start; applications after the start have a stated eight-week decision period. Late applications may cover up to one year back but lose older periods. Check amount and duration; a baby’s hospital stay exceeding seven days may permit extension. Use the official route and our assistance request for preparation help if needed.
7. Check private maternity coverage
A private disability policy may also pay maternity benefit. Government guidance says that payment does not reduce ZEZ. Conversely, the insurer may reduce its own payment because of ZEZ under the policy. Check coordination, conditions and evidence before applying; do not assume two full insured incomes.
Do fewer than 1,225 hours mean I cannot qualify?
Not simply because of that threshold. The hours affect the calculation. With fewer hours UWV examines profit or income and the applicable period. You must still satisfy the ZEZ eligibility conditions.
