Report sickness to UWV by the second day of illness using Mijn UWV or the UWV app. If you also work, notify your employer too. Sickness does not automatically remove every WW obligation or immediately start a Ziektewet sickness benefit.

1. Report the first day of illness
This guidance concerns illness during Dutch WW unemployment benefit. Record your first day of illness and notify UWV by the second day through Mijn UWV or the app. Working alongside WW requires two notifications: UWV and your employer.
2. Discuss what you can still do
State whether you can still apply for jobs when reporting sickness. If you cannot, discuss this with UWV instead of assuming a general exemption. Complete the questionnaire in time and cooperate with contact and appropriate reintegration arrangements.
3. Check which benefit continues
You usually keep WW during the first thirteen weeks. Illness connected to pregnancy, childbirth or organ donation can lead straight to Ziektewet. Reaching your maximum WW duration changes the transition. UWV also assesses illness within four weeks after WW ends if you have no employer.
4. Keep reporting income
The monthly income statement remains necessary, including when Ziektewet follows WW. Keep the sickness confirmation and review UWV's letter about your benefit and duties. A sickness notification does not establish automatic entitlement to every subsequent benefit.
5. Report recovery and check the next step
Report recovery within one day through Mijn UWV or the app. If you recover within thirteen weeks, the ordinary WW arrangements apply again. After longer illness and the end of Ziektewet, a new WW application may be necessary; check this with UWV in time.
6. Record agreements and documents
Create a timeline of notifications, contact, income statements and recovery below. Identify missed deadlines or unclear letters as specific questions. Avoid unnecessary medical details in this local record. Request appropriate personal assistance if you dispute a decision.
Does sickness automatically exempt me from job applications?
No. State whether applying for jobs is possible and discuss the arrangements with UWV. If you can apply, that duty continues. Keep a record of the agreement and report recovery within one day.
