Can I get an individual income supplement?
What would you like help with?
Detailed explanation, checklist and sources
Ask your municipality about individuele inkomenstoeslag if you have had low income and assets for a prolonged period with little prospect of improvement. It is an annual extra payment, not reimbursement of one specific bill.

1. Check age and scheme
This supplement is for people aged 21 up to AOW pension age with prolonged low income, little assessable wealth and no prospect of income improvement. Today's low bank balance alone is insufficient. Receiving social assistance is not a universal requirement: other low income can qualify. It differs from monthly general assistance, special assistance for necessary costs and national rent/healthcare allowances.

2. Check your municipality's rules
Your municipality defines prolonged and low income and the amount for your household. Do not assume a national percentage or fixed three-year period. For illustration, the reviewed Utrecht guidance uses twelve months and Schiedam's ordinance 36 months; these are local examples, not options you can choose. Check partner, study, assets and repeat-application rules in your own municipality.

3. Gather financial and prospects evidence
List wages, benefits, business income, household composition and changes over the required reference period. Gather requested bank/savings and partner/household details; explain income or debts requiring different treatment. The municipality assesses your abilities and efforts to improve income. Explain relevant limitations, applications or programmes with evidence. A qualification, unemployment or student status alone does not establish entitlement through this general page.

4. Submit an actual application
Use the official municipal form, online where offered, or ask for accessible help/another route. Calling for information is not the same as applying. Check whether your partner must sign and which documents the municipality already has. Keep the completed form, date, receipt and requests for additions. Supply missing information on time or explain why it is unavailable. Our checklist submits nothing and protects no deadline.

5. Check payment and next application
The municipality pays an awarded amount in one instalment and you choose how to spend it. There is no fixed national amount. Check calculation, household category and earlier payment. Do not assume automatic annual renewal: ask when you may reapply and whether a letter comes first. Keep the decision and payment date. For delay ask about the actual decision period; a local target is not a national payment guarantee.

6. Respond to a refusal in time
Read the written decision and remedy instructions. If disagreeing, check the objection deadline, normally six weeks after notification. Identify the disputed period, income, assets or prospects assessment with evidence. Use the address/portal in the decision, sign where required and keep receipt. Calling or requesting our help does not extend time. For urgency ask whether separate interim relief is needed; objection does not automatically produce money.
Must I prove how I spend the supplement?
An awarded supplement is freely spendable, not linked to a single purchase. You must still meet the conditions and provide correct application information. Annual support does not mean automatic payment without further municipal assessment.
