When does Dutch child benefit stop if my child turns 18?
What would you like help with?
Detailed explanation, checklist and sources
SVB checks the child's age on the first day of the quarter. If your child is already 18 then, no child benefit is due for that quarter. If still 17 then, it continues for the entire quarter and is paid after the quarter ends.

1. Check the first day of the quarter
This guidance concerns Dutch child benefit ending because of an eighteenth birthday. The quarter boundaries are 1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October. Other child-benefit conditions still matter; this guidance does not create entitlement that was already absent.
2. Identify the final quarter
Compare the birthday with the quarter boundary. If the child turns 18 on 1 October, there is no entitlement for the fourth quarter. If the birthday is 2 October, the child was still 17 on 1 October and that quarter continues.
3. Distinguish entitlement from payment date
Payment comes after the quarter. A transfer after the child's eighteenth birthday can therefore be the final payment for an earlier quarter. Check the period on the payment statement before concluding that too much or too little was paid.
4. Review the SVB letter
SVB sends a letter about the ending. Compare the birth date, benefit period and previous payments. Contact SVB if information is wrong or the outcome does not match your circumstances. For a disputed decision, follow the objection instructions in the letter.
5. Prepare other applications separately
From age 18, student finance, a school-pupil allowance or healthcare allowance may be available under their own conditions. They do not start automatically when child benefit stops. Have your child check each scheme's requirements and who must apply.
6. Create an action record
Record the final quarter, expected payment and separate applications below. The local preparation does not decide entitlement. Track the relevant deadlines yourself and request personal assistance if the SVB letter or another application remains unclear.
Can child benefit still be paid after my child is 18?
Yes. Payment follows the quarter. If your child was under 18 on its first day, that quarterly payment can arrive later. Check the period on the statement rather than just the date of the bank transfer.
