Can I receive municipal study allowance because of a medical disability?
What would you like help with?
Detailed explanation, checklist and sources
Apply to your municipality of residence if a medical disability prevents earning alongside study. Student finance or a basic school-pupil allowance and no Wajong entitlement are important conditions.

1. Your situation
Check that you receive student finance or the basic school-pupil allowance. This allowance replaces side-job earnings prevented by your medical disability; a diagnosis alone does not establish that. Wajong entitlement excludes this allowance.
2. Conditions
Apply where you live, even if your school is elsewhere. Find studietoeslag on the official municipal website. Use its form or portal and ask which medical assessment and documents are required.
3. Preparation
Keep proof of enrolment, DUO funding, age and any internship allowance. Provide medical details only through the designated channel. Your assets and your parents' assets have not counted for this allowance since April 2022.
4. Apply
National minimum net monthly amounts from 1 July 2026 are: age 21+ €390.07; 20 €312.06; 19 €234.05; 18 €195.04; 17 €154.08; 16 €134.58; 15 €117.03. Municipalities may pay more. Rates change every half-year; check the period covered by your application.
5. Decision
For an internship forming part of your course, €234.05 of the internship allowance is disregarded from 1 July 2026. Only the excess is deducted. A €300 internship allowance leaves €324.12 of the minimum study allowance for age 21+. Report the internship and its payment for a correct calculation.
6. Next steps
Keep the application and receipt. Check the decision's age band, local rate, award period and internship deduction. Ask about discrepancies and follow the objection route and deadline stated in the decision. This is separate from DUO provisions for medical study delay.
Do my parents' savings count?
No. Student and parental assets have not affected this study allowance since April 2022.
