When can I receive double Dutch child benefit and how do I apply?
What would you like help with?
Detailed explanation, checklist and sources
A child living at home with intensive care needs follows different rules from a child living away. A diagnosis alone does not establish entitlement. Check the appropriate SVB route; medical evidence for the care assessment goes to CIZ.

1. Choose the route
For intensive care at home, your child must be aged 3–17 and sleep at home at least four nights weekly. A treating professional must have established the care condition; a Wlz indication or positive CIZ advice is required. Living away for education, elite sport, illness or disability follows separate SVB conditions, maintenance and visiting rules. Use its official away-from-home route.
2. Check automatic award
For a Wlz indication issued on or after 1 July 2024, CIZ shares information with SVB and an award follows automatically if the conditions are met. Apply yourself if you blocked sharing or the indication is older. Check existing letters first to avoid a duplicate application.
3. Prepare the care assessment
Without a Wlz indication, apply to SVB; it requests CIZ advice. Describe additional care and supervision with concrete daily examples. CIZ assesses ten functions using age-related criteria. Our checklist does not predict a score or award.
4. Submit the correct documents
Only the child-benefit applicant can apply for double benefit. Use Mijn SVB. Then send the CIZ questionnaire, authorisation and requested medical documents to CIZ, not SVB or our chat. SVB's guide states four weeks for these documents; check your letter and seek help promptly if necessary.
5. Check decision and period
Keep confirmations. SVB states eight weeks for the decision but sends notice if CIZ needs longer. Check the starting period: since July 2024, up to two quarters of retroactivity may be assessed depending on the application and conditions. If your child has just turned 18, ask SVB to check the earlier indication/application period. Challenge a decision using the objection route and deadline in the letter.
6. Separate the annual extra payment
An annual extra payment is separate. It depends, among other things, on double benefit in every quarter and partner/income circumstances or an exception. One award does not establish this extra entitlement. Check the relevant year on SVB's extra-payment page. Our follow-up help prepares your question and submits nothing.
7. Check maintenance and residence away from home
The away-from-home route requires at least €1,432 maintenance per quarter. A combined 46 visiting days by both parents per quarter excludes this route; continuing visits count too. Foreign education must be comparable to Dutch education and unavailable within 25 kilometres of the family. A US high-school year does not qualify. A recognised elite sports centre may qualify. For illness or disability, institutional costs must be paid under Wlz, Jeugdwet or health insurance. Hospital stays shorter than six months do not make a child resident away; stays longer than six months, or expected to be so from day one, may.
8. Check the extra amount for 2025
The 2025 annual extra amount is €2,702.13, once per family even with several care-intensive children. With a fiscal partner throughout the year, one work income must exceed €6,145 and the other be at most €6,145. No income test applies without a year-long fiscal partner or with full permanent incapacity. SVB lists IVA, qualifying Wajong, WAO/WAZ of at least 80%, and qualifying private/foreign benefits; WGA is not full permanent incapacity. Work income includes wages, freelance work, business profits and pgb care wages after applicable deductions, but not pensions or benefits. White payroll-tax tables indicate work income; green tables do not. Applications for 2024 are closed.
Is a diagnosis sufficient for double child benefit?
No. Alongside other conditions, CIZ assesses intensive care or the relevant Wlz route applies. The separate away-from-home scheme requires a different assessment.
