How do I prepare and properly submit my Dutch income tax return?
What would you like help with?
Detailed explanation, checklist and sources
Choose the correct tax year, gather records and check pre-filled details. Then sign and submit through Mijn Belastingdienst and keep the receipt confirmation. This guidance concerns Dutch personal income tax, not a VAT return.
Which sections apply to your tax return?
Tick the situations that apply to you in the year covered by your tax return. You can select several situations. The relevant guidance appears immediately below.
We do not store your choices. If you download a file, you save it on your own device. You do not need to enter amounts, DigiD details or documents here.
First choose your next step. Then tick the topics that apply to you.
Gather your documents for the correct tax year. Then open Mijn Belastingdienst, choose Inkomstenbelasting (income tax) and the year. Check and complete the details; only sign and submit when everything is correct. Keep the receipt confirmation.
Go to the relevant guidance →Selected sections: 0

I received wages, a pension or benefits
Check each employer, pension provider and benefit agency separately. Compare the reported income and payroll tax withheld with your annual statements. Even pre-filled information may be missing or incorrect. Did you also have other income? Select that situation too.
Have these documents ready
- Annual statements from all employers, pension providers and benefit agencies
- Any provisional assessment for the same tax year
I owned a home, or bought or sold one
Compare the property and mortgage details with your records. Check the WOZ valuation date applicable to the tax year; do not automatically use the latest WOZ value. Buying, selling, renovating, letting or separating may require further assessment. Interest or costs paid are not automatically deductible in full.
Have these documents ready
- The WOZ assessment for the tax year and the annual mortgage statement
- For a purchase or sale: the notary’s completion statement; for renovations: invoices and financing records
I had a partner or lived with someone
First check whether and from when you are tax partners: living together alone does not decide this. You can only allocate joint income and deductions for which allocation is permitted. Wages and pensions, for example, cannot be freely allocated. Check the combined outcome and coordinate your returns; do not share DigiD login details.
Have these documents ready
- Details of cohabitation, marriage or registered partnership and relevant dates
- Annual records for both partners and details of joint income and deductions
I divorced or separated
Check when your tax partnership ended in your circumstances; living apart alone is not enough if you are married. Consider whether you wish and are eligible to be treated as tax partners for the whole tax year. Pay attention to your home, mortgage and spousal maintenance. Child maintenance is not deductible. Obtain specific advice on the consequences if there is disagreement or complex housing arrangements.
Have these documents ready
- Dates of address changes and the divorce petition or termination of partnership
- Agreements and proof of payments relating to the home, mortgage and spousal maintenance
I was self-employed or had a sole proprietorship
Check whether you qualify as an entrepreneur for Dutch income tax purposes. Chamber of Commerce registration or VAT status does not automatically establish this. If you qualify, complete the business section as well as the private section of your personal return. Check the conditions for each entrepreneur deduction. VAT and corporate income tax require separate returns; this guide does not complete them.
Have these documents ready
- Business records showing turnover, expenses, assets and debts
- Details of investments, private use and hours worked, where relevant
I had earnings from side jobs or other work
Were you neither an employee nor an entrepreneur for income tax purposes for this work? The income may then fall under income from other work. Check which earnings and expenses you need to declare; entrepreneur deductions do not automatically apply. Pure expense reimbursements or activities in a hobby or family context may be treated differently. Ask for help with classification if unsure.
Have these documents ready
- Overview of payments received and the related work
- Receipts and other evidence of expenses and reimbursements
I had savings, investments, crypto or other assets and debts
Check your accounts, investments, crypto and other assets and debts, including information that is not pre-filled. Use the values and reference dates requested for your tax year. Information on actual returns may also be required for box 3. This guide does not calculate box 3 tax or determine which exemption applies to you.
Have these documents ready
- Annual statements for bank accounts, investments and crypto platforms
- Requested information on other assets, debts and actual returns
I lived or worked abroad for all or part of the year, or had foreign income
If you live in the Netherlands, you generally also have to declare your foreign income. This does not mean the Netherlands taxes everything: treaties and relief from double taxation may be relevant. Immigration, emigration or residence outside the Netherlands may require a different filing procedure. First check your periods of residence, income type and countries; do not simply deduct foreign tax.
Have these documents ready
- Foreign annual income statements and evidence of tax withheld or paid
- Countries of residence and work, periods of residence and any moving dates
I want to check deductions, such as healthcare costs, donations or spousal maintenance
Check the conditions and any threshold for each expense for your tax year. A payment or receipt alone does not establish entitlement to a deduction. Keep reimbursements separate. Your health insurance premium, compulsory deductible and statutory Zvw personal contribution are not deductible healthcare costs. Use the official guidance and our deductions check before entering amounts.
Have these documents ready
- Invoices and proof of payment for each potential deduction
- Reimbursements received and evidence that any additional conditions are met
What should I enter here?
Use this guidance alongside your 2025 Dutch income tax return. Select your situations above; the relevant field guidance appears below. The Dutch terms help you find the subject in Mijn Belastingdienst. Screens may differ depending on your situation.
This field guidance is for tax year 2025. Rules, amounts and reference dates may differ for other years. Emigration, death, a business, a substantial shareholding or complex asset situations require additional assessment. This is not a complete copy of the tax return form.
For example: fiscaal loon, WOZ or zorgkosten. Do not enter personal information here.

The correct tax year Belastingjaar
- What does this mean?
- You file a return for a particular calendar year. The year in which you complete it may be different.
- Where can you find this?
- Your tax return letter and the year selected under Inkomstenbelasting in Mijn Belastingdienst.
- Check this before continuing
- Prepare documents for the same year and check the filing deadline in your letter or extension decision.
- Fictional example
- You complete your 2025 return in 2026: use your 2025 annual statements.
- If you are unsure or something is missing
- First check which year is requested. Do not use this year-specific guidance for 2024 or 2026 without checking.
A pre-filled amount is wrong Vooraf ingevulde gegevens
- What does this mean?
- Pre-filled means information has already been entered; you still need to compare it with your own records.
- Where can you find this?
- The annual statement from your employer, bank or other relevant organisation.
- Check this before continuing
- Make changes under the relevant subject in Mijn Belastingdienst. The Vooraf ingevulde gegevens overview itself cannot be edited; the tax return app cannot add or change details.
- Fictional example
- The bank statement differs: open Bank- en spaarrekeningen to enter the correct details.
- If you are unsure or something is missing
- First check the year, account and owner. Ask the issuer for clarification if documents conflict.
Which wage amount is meant? Fiscaal loon
- What does this mean?
- This is your wage for tax calculation purposes. It is not the net amount paid into your bank account.
- Where can you find this?
- Your annual statement: fiscaal loon or loon loonbelasting/volksverzekeringen.
- Check this before continuing
- Compare the year and amount for each employer. Do not subtract tax withheld from this wage.
- Fictional example
- Your annual statement shows € 31.200 in taxable wages; your net receipts are lower. The wage field concerns € 31.200.
- If you are unsure or something is missing
- Ask your employer for the annual statement or an explanation of the label.
Tax already withheld Loonheffing
- What does this mean?
- These are the taxes and contributions already withheld by your employer or benefit agency.
- Where can you find this?
- The loonheffing or loonbelasting/volksverzekeringen line on your annual statement.
- Check this before continuing
- Do not confuse this line with wages, employment tax credit or an employer contribution. Check each annual statement separately.
- Fictional example
- If loonheffing shows € 4.800, enter that amount for the corresponding employer, not the wage amount.
- If you are unsure or something is missing
- Ask the issuer to identify which line belongs in the requested field.
Pensions, AOW and benefits Pensioen en uitkeringen
- What does this mean?
- For these too, use the annual figures from each separate payer.
- Where can you find this?
- Annual statements from, for example, UWV, SVB and your pension provider.
- Check this before continuing
- Compare income and payroll tax withheld separately. Add missing payers and do not enter the same annual statement twice.
- Fictional example
- You receive AOW and a supplementary pension: check both payers, not just SVB.
- If you are unsure or something is missing
- Request any missing annual statement from the payer. A monthly payment is not a full-year amount.
Which property value should I use? WOZ-waarde
- What does this mean?
- For the 2025 return, use the WOZ value with valuation date 1 January 2024.
- Where can you find this?
- Your municipality’s WOZ assessment for 2025.
- Check this before continuing
- Check the address, assessment year and valuation date. The purchase price or latest appraisal is not automatically the WOZ value.
- Fictional example
- An assessment received in 2025 with valuation date 1 January 2024 belongs with the 2025 return.
- If you are unsure or something is missing
- Request the correct assessment from your municipality. If it has been amended, check which value applies.
Mortgage interest is different from repayment Rente eigenwoningschuld
- What does this mean?
- Deductible interest concerns the loan for your own home, insofar as the conditions are met.
- Where can you find this?
- Your annual mortgage statement and loan agreement.
- Check this before continuing
- Separate interest and principal repayments. Principal repayments are not deductible. Refinancing, equity released from a previous home or mixed use require a separate assessment of deductibility.
- Fictional example
- A monthly payment includes interest and principal: do not enter the total as interest.
- If you are unsure or something is missing
- Have the deductible portion assessed if the whole loan was not used for your own home.
Costs when buying or refinancing Financieringskosten eigen woning
- What does this mean?
- Certain financing costs may be deductible. Purchase costs are a different category.
- Where can you find this?
- The itemised notary’s completion statement and invoices from the mortgage adviser and valuer.
- Check this before continuing
- Mortgage deed costs may qualify; purchase deed costs, transfer tax and buying-agent fees do not. Also check the conditions for qualifying home acquisition debt.
- Fictional example
- The notary lists both a purchase deed and a mortgage deed: assess those lines separately.
- If you are unsure or something is missing
- Ask for a breakdown; do not deduct the entire notary’s bill.
Am I a tax partner? Fiscaal partnerschap
- What does this mean?
- This is a tax relationship defined by law; simply being in a relationship is not enough.
- Where can you find this?
- Your marital status, registration at the same address and relevant agreements or family details.
- Check this before continuing
- Answer the official partner questions using the correct dates. Additional conditions apply to cohabitation; special rules apply to separation or foreign circumstances.
- Fictional example
- Two housemates are not automatically tax partners solely because they share an address.
- If you are unsure or something is missing
- Use the official conditions. Have unusual family or cross-border situations checked.
Allocating joint items Verdelen
- What does this mean?
- You may allocate certain joint income and deductions if you are tax partners throughout the year or validly elect to be treated as tax partners for the whole year.
- Where can you find this?
- The allocation screen and the joint information of both partners.
- Check this before continuing
- The combined allocation must be 100%. Wages, pensions and business profits cannot be freely allocated.
- Fictional example
- A joint deduction is not entered at 100% by both partners.
- If you are unsure or something is missing
- First check whether allocation is permitted; compare the outcome for both partners and coordinate the returns.
Receiving or paying spousal maintenance Partneralimentatie
- What does this mean?
- Spousal maintenance received is income; spousal maintenance paid may be deductible.
- Where can you find this?
- Your agreement or court decision and proof of payments for 2025.
- Check this before continuing
- Keep received and paid amounts separate. Housing arrangements or a lump-sum settlement need additional checks.
- Fictional example
- You receive monthly spousal maintenance: check what you actually received during the year.
- If you are unsure or something is missing
- Have unclear payments classified first; a payment to your ex is not automatically maintenance.
Keep child maintenance separate Kinderalimentatie
- What does this mean?
- You do not declare child maintenance received as income. Child maintenance paid is not deductible.
- Where can you find this?
- The breakdown in your agreements and bank payments.
- Check this before continuing
- Do not mix spousal and child maintenance.
- Fictional example
- A combined payment includes money for your ex and your child: separate the parts before entering them.
- If you are unsure or something is missing
- Request a clear breakdown if a single amount was agreed without explanation.
The balance on the correct date Bank- en spaarrekeningen
- What does this mean?
- For the standard 2025 box 3 overview, use your balances on 1 January 2025, including those outside the Netherlands.
- Where can you find this?
- Each bank’s tax statement, including the balance reference date.
- Check this before continuing
- Check the account number, account holder and date. Do not use today’s balance. Also assess information relating to minor children.
- Fictional example
- € 12.000 on 1 January and € 8.000 on 31 December are different values: use the requested date.
- If you are unsure or something is missing
- Request the correct annual statement. Joint accounts or children’s assets must be attributed correctly.
Investments and other assets Beleggingen
- What does this mean?
- Investments have their own value; this is not the same as your contribution or bank balance.
- Where can you find this?
- Your investment provider’s tax statement and valuation information for the requested reference date.
- Check this before continuing
- Check the value for 1 January 2025. Substantial shareholdings and business assets may belong in a different box.
- Fictional example
- An investment bought for € 2.000 may be worth more or less on the reference date.
- If you are unsure or something is missing
- Ask for help with unlisted shares, unusual insurance products or unclear valuations.
The question about actual returns Werkelijk rendement
- What does this mean?
- For 2025, you can report actual returns in your tax return. The Tax Administration then compares them with the deemed return and uses the most favourable outcome.
- Where can you find this?
- The official actual-returns checklist and the associated annual figures.
- Check this before continuing
- Follow the separate questions. Actual returns are not the same as the balance on 1 January. Reporting them is optional.
- Fictional example
- A balance on a reference date alone does not show your return for the year.
- If you are unsure or something is missing
- Use the official checklist; do not make an incomplete calculation based only on interest received. A separate procedure applies to 2024 and earlier years.
Which healthcare costs can I include? Specifieke zorgkosten
- What does this mean?
- Only costs meeting the conditions can qualify; payment alone is not enough.
- Where can you find this?
- Invoices, payment evidence and reimbursement details for 2025.
- Check this before continuing
- Premiums, deductibles and statutory personal contributions are not deductible. Costs for which you can receive reimbursement do not qualify. The filing software calculates the threshold.
- Fictional example
- A bill has a reimbursed and an unreimbursed portion: first check whether the remaining type of cost is deductible.
- If you are unsure or something is missing
- Look up the type of cost in the official overview. Do not subtract the threshold yourself a second time.
Ordinary or periodic donations Giften
- What does this mean?
- The recipient and type of donation determine the conditions. A monthly payment is not automatically a periodic donation for tax purposes.
- Where can you find this?
- Bank statements, the organisation’s details and any donation agreement.
- Check this before continuing
- Check ANBI status. For an association without ANBI status, only qualifying periodic donations are deductible. Cash donations are not deductible. Ordinary donations have a threshold and maximum.
- Fictional example
- Transferring money every month without a valid periodic-donation agreement does not automatically make it periodic.
- If you are unsure or something is missing
- Check the official conditions before selecting the donation type; have gifts in kind assessed separately.
Deducting additional retirement contributions Lijfrente / jaarruimte
- What does this mean?
- Annuity contributions paid are not automatically deductible in full. You must have sufficient deductible contribution allowance.
- Where can you find this?
- Your payment evidence, 2024 annual income statement and 2024 pension accrual details for the 2025 annual allowance.
- Check this before continuing
- Calculate the allowance using the official tool. Also check any unused allowance from earlier years.
- Fictional example
- You paid € 2.000: that does not yet prove € 2.000 is deductible.
- If you are unsure or something is missing
- Use the official tool or have the allowance calculated; do not choose an arbitrary amount yourself.
Earnings and expenses from side work Inkomsten uit overig werk
- What does this mean?
- Work outside employment may fall into this category if you are not an entrepreneur for income tax purposes for that work.
- Where can you find this?
- An overview of work, payments and substantiated business expenses.
- Check this before continuing
- Declare earnings and allowable costs correctly. Income from other work does not entitle you to the self-employed deduction or investment deduction. Hobbies or pure expense reimbursements may be treated differently.
- Fictional example
- Payment for a job and the expenses incurred for it are separate figures.
- If you are unsure or something is missing
- First have the tax classification determined if it is unclear whether this is employment, a business or other work.
Turnover is not profit Opbrengsten
- What does this mean?
- Turnover is revenue from your sales; costs are accounted for separately.
- Where can you find this?
- Your sales invoices and profit and loss account.
- Check this before continuing
- Where you charge VAT, use turnover excluding VAT. Check that it reconciles with your records.
- Fictional example
- An invoice of € 121 including € 21 VAT contains € 100 turnover.
- If you are unsure or something is missing
- Ask your bookkeeper to reconcile the figures if bank receipts and turnover differ.
What are my business’s assets and debts? Balans
- What does this mean?
- The balance sheet shows business assets, liabilities and equity on the requested date.
- Where can you find this?
- Your annual accounts and underlying records.
- Check this before continuing
- Receivables are amounts still to be received; liabilities are amounts still to be paid. Liquid funds are bank balances and cash. Keep private and business items separate.
- Fictional example
- An unpaid sales invoice is a receivable, not money already in the bank.
- If you are unsure or something is missing
- Have an unbalanced balance sheet or private use assessed; this guidance does not prepare annual accounts.
Do not forget foreign income Buitenlandse inkomsten
- What does this mean?
- If you live in the Netherlands, you generally declare your worldwide income, including foreign income.
- Where can you find this?
- Foreign annual statements, residence and employment details and tax evidence.
- Check this before continuing
- Foreign taxation does not mean you can omit the income. Relief from double taxation depends on the country, income and rules.
- Fictional example
- Foreign wages may need to be reported even when double-taxation relief applies.
- If you are unsure or something is missing
- Have the country and income circumstances checked. Do not simply deduct foreign tax from income.
Living in the Netherlands for part of the year Aangifte M
- What does this mean?
- Immigration or emigration requires a different filing procedure from living in the Netherlands all year.
- Where can you find this?
- Your moving dates, countries of residence and Dutch and foreign income details.
- Check this before continuing
- Check that you have opened the correct return. The M return is available online for 2025.
- Fictional example
- You moved to the Netherlands in 2025: do not treat this as if you lived here all year.
- If you are unsure or something is missing
- Use the official M procedure and ask for help with allocating periods or compulsory insurance coverage.
Where do I enter crypto holdings? Cryptobezittingen
- What does this mean?
- Privately held crypto normally belongs in box 3. The 2025 return has a separate Cryptobezittingen option under bank accounts and other assets.
- Where can you find this?
- Your platform statements and wallet records at 00.00 on 1 January 2025.
- Check this before continuing
- Use the value on the exchange platform you use on the reference date, not just the purchase amount. The actual-returns questions are separate.
- Fictional example
- You bought crypto for € 500; its value on the reference date may differ.
- If you are unsure or something is missing
- Ask for help if prices are missing or crypto forms part of your work or business.
Which debts belong in box 3? Schulden
- What does this mean?
- Only debts that fall under box 3 count here; a debt threshold applies.
- Where can you find this?
- Loan agreements and balance statements on 1 January 2025.
- Check this before continuing
- Do not include qualifying home acquisition debt in box 1 again in box 3. Dutch tax debts are usually excluded; there are exceptions.
- Fictional example
- A consumer loan is a different type of debt from a deductible mortgage on your own home.
- If you are unsure or something is missing
- Check the official debt list; do not simply subtract every outstanding bill from your savings.
When has it actually been sent? Ondertekenen en verzenden
- What does this mean?
- Saving keeps your work; signing and sending submit the return.
- Where can you find this?
- The final overview and receipt confirmation in Mijn Belastingdienst.
- Check this before continuing
- Review your open questions, check the year and calculation, sign and submit. Keep the copy and confirmation.
- Fictional example
- You saved and closed: that is not yet a receipt confirmation for a submitted return.
- If you are unsure or something is missing
- Use save and close if you want to pause. Ask for help with missing information in good time and keep track of your filing deadline.

Help with your next step
Content of this guide checked: 16 October 2026
On this page
1. Check year and deadline
Read the filing letter and check its tax year and deadline, including any granted extension. No letter does not automatically mean no filing obligation: use our separate guidance for that question. This preparation grants no new deadline. If a date has passed, act promptly rather than waiting until next year.
2. Gather the relevant records
Gather annual income statements, bank and investment records and, where relevant, mortgage documents, the WOZ assessment and evidence of possible deductions. Use the official checklist for that year. For the 2025 return, for example, the WOZ valuation date is 1 January 2024; do not simply use the newest value. Assets may require information on actual returns.
3. Open the official return
Open Mijn Belastingdienst yourself, select Inkomstenbelasting and the right year. This page is not a tax form and does not request your DigiD, BSN or tax documents. If someone helps, use official authorisation instead of sharing your login details.
4. Check and complete it
Compare pre-filled information with your own records and correct omissions or errors. Check conditions before deducting expenses: proof of payment does not automatically make an expense deductible. Joint filing and allocation need attention with a tax partner. International situations, business profits and complex assets require additional help.
5. Sign and submit
Review all sections and the calculation. Saving, closing or keeping a PDF alone does not file a return. Sign and select Verzenden. For a joint return, both tax partners sign using their own DigiD. Check that the receipt confirmation appears.
6. Keep evidence and seek follow-up help
Keep the submitted copy and receipt confirmation locally. Payment follows the assessment and payment information, not merely your draft calculation. If you find an error, use our guidance on correcting a return; extension and reminder questions have separate routes. Seek specific help from the Belastingdienst or through our assistance route.
7. Business owner: which return and portal?
A sole trader does not file corporation tax for their own profit. If you qualify as an income-tax entrepreneur, report business profit in your personal return through Mijn Belastingdienst, tax software or an intermediary. Include personal income and deductions too. VAT, payroll taxes and corporation tax use separate returns in Mijn Belastingdienst Zakelijk. Entrepreneur status for income tax and VAT is assessed separately. VAT status does not prove entitlement to income-tax entrepreneur deductions. Belastingdienst considers expected profit, independence, time, clients, public presence, risk and liability. One factor alone does not decide your circumstances. Prepare turnover, expenses, assets, private use, hours and supporting records for each activity. If uncertain, first establish whether receipts are business profit, wages or income from other work. Other work does not carry the same entrepreneur relief. Check each deduction’s conditions; a checklist is not tax approval. Check the tax year and filing-letter date. Your VAT period is not your income-tax deadline. Use an authorised representative and never share DigiD. Foreign residence or complex legal forms require the special official route and expert help.
Belastingdienst — ondernemersaangifte ↗
8. Box 1: which income and rates apply in 2026?
Box 1 is taxable income from work and your main home for one tax year: for example wages, pensions, benefits, business profit or other work and the owner-occupied-home addition, less applicable deductions. It is not automatically net pay or turnover. Substantial-interest dividends belong to Box 2; ordinary assets may belong to Box 3. For someone below AOW pension age throughout 2026 and subject to normal Dutch national-insurance contributions: 35.75% on the first €38,883, 37.56% on the portion above €38,883 through €78,426 and 49.50% on the excess. The highest bracket reached therefore does not apply to all income. The first bracket also includes national-insurance contributions. If you reach AOW age in 2026, use the official table for the relevant month. If you reached it earlier, the first rate is 17.85%; the first boundary is €38,883, or €41,123 if born before 1 January 1946. The next boundary remains €78,426. Cross-border residence or insurance can require a different calculation. These bracket rates are before applicable tax credits. The final amount also depends on deductions, credits and wage tax already withheld or provisional assessments. A deduction is not always relieved at your highest bracket rate. Check annual statements and the full return calculation in Mijn Belastingdienst; this explanation is not a personal take-home-pay calculator.
Is my return filed if I saved a PDF?
Not necessarily. A saved draft or PDF does not prove submission. Complete signing and sending, then check the receipt confirmation in Mijn Belastingdienst.
