Tax law
This website explains Dutch law. It does not provide legal advice about other countries.

Can I still amend an income tax return I have submitted?

Yes. You can usually correct your own mistake or missing information for up to five years after the tax year. First check whether you can make the correction yourself, whether the Belastingdienst has already changed the return, and whether a separate objection or tax-partner deadline applies.

Your next step on the official website

Prepare here, then go to the appropriate authority.

This official route starts with Dutch guidance.

How to proceed

  1. Choose the tax year and check how you filed originally.
  2. Check the corrections, sign and submit yourself; paper returns or authority-made changes may need another route.

After signing in or opening a further form, you may encounter Dutch text. The official link opens in a new tab. Keep this guidance beside the form.

Dutch terms to take with you

Dutch tax return 2025: help with filling it in

Prepare your Dutch income tax return for 2025. Choose your situation for explanations of 26 fields, examples, document checks and a downloadable guide.

On this page

1. Which mistake do you need to correct?

This guidance concerns your own Dutch income tax return. Compare the submitted return with your annual records and identify exactly which entry is wrong or incomplete. A mistake in your return is different from a disagreement about a change made by the Belastingdienst. Check whether you have already received an assessment or a letter explaining a departure from your return.

2. Submit the amended return online

In Mijn Belastingdienst, open the correct tax year and the amendment option. Check the entire return, amend the relevant information, then sign and submit it again. Saving alone is not enough. You also amend a return originally submitted using the app through Mijn Belastingdienst. The Belastingdienst processes the most recently received return.

3. Which deadline applies?

You can usually correct a return for up to five years after the tax year, including after receiving a final assessment. For the 2021 tax year, this means no later than 31 December 2026. A letter requesting an amendment must be received in time. Allocation between tax partners has a different, shorter deadline; use the separate guidance for this. If an objection deadline is running, do not wait for a correction to be processed.

4. When do you need a letter?

For a paper return, you can send a complete replacement form or an amendment letter. If the Belastingdienst has changed your return itself, you may be unable to amend the information yourself and may need a written request for revision. Include your name, address, sending date, tax year, the mistake and the reason for the change; sign the letter. Check your tax office's address using the official source.

5. Keep a clear record

Keep the old and new versions, relevant supporting documents and the receipt confirmation. For each amended entry, record the old amount, the correct amount and the basis for your correction. Do not attach your entire financial administration without a specific reason. The preparation tool below creates your own record; it is not a tax return or evidence that the Belastingdienst has received anything.

6. Your next step

Choose the appropriate route: an online correction, a paper amendment or a review of a dispute about the assessment. The draft letter below only supports the written amendment described here. It does not replace a timely notice of objection. If an assessment, deadline or partner allocation is unclear, you can request help through our own assistance form; send documents yourself only after checking them.

Which correction route fits your return?

Filed digitally: amend, sign and submit again. Filed on paper: complete a new form or send a correction letter. Did the tax authority amend your return? Check the revision procedure.

Draft letter: amendment or revision of my tax return

Use this only where a written correction is appropriate. Complete the brackets, check the tax office's address and sign. A dispute about an assessment may require a timely objection; this letter does not protect that deadline. The text stays on your device until you download or send it yourself.

Edit your draftWord

Your edits stay on this page and are not automatically saved or sent. Complete every placeholder.

Is saving the return again the same as filing it again?

No. Complete the signing and submission steps again and keep the confirmation. A saved draft or downloaded PDF does not, by itself, prove a new submission.

Describe the solution you would like, such as an explanation of a deduction and repayment of the outstanding amount.

For example: which document is missing, who can provide it and what should I do first?
