Can I still get an extension for my income tax return?
What would you like help with?
Detailed explanation, checklist and sources
That depends on the deadline in your filing invitation. The ordinary extension-request deadline for the 2025 return passed on 1 May 2026. If your invitation gives a different deadline that has not yet passed, an initial request using the official form may still be possible.

On this page
1. Start with the date in your letter
This page concerns a first request for an extension to file a Dutch income tax return. Find the tax year and the deadline for receipt in your filing invitation. Note whether you have already received an extension. A tax adviser's filing scheme, a return for someone who has died or living abroad may involve a different procedure.
2. The ordinary deadline has passed
On the review date, 29 October 2026, the ordinary deadline for requesting an extension for the 2025 return has passed: it was 1 May 2026. If you were required to file then and did not, file as soon as possible. This page does not promise a new extension after your deadline has expired. Do not wait if you receive a reminder or a formal demand to file.
3. A different deadline may still be open
If your invitation gives a different filing deadline that has not yet passed, you can request an extension before that date. Compare the invitation with any previous extension confirmations. A request is not the same as approval; keep the request and check which final date is actually confirmed.
4. Use the official form
Outside the ordinary online period, the current official route is the Aanvraag uitstel aangifte inkomstenbelasting form. Download it from the Belastingdienst, complete it fully, print it, sign it and send it to the address on the form. It is intended for a first request. Your own general letter or our preparation download does not replace this form.
5. An extension has limits
If the extension is granted, the Belastingdienst states that you get four extra months. Sending a request does not automatically guarantee that extension. A tax partner must apply separately. An extension to file also does not mean that tax interest is waived. If necessary, ask an adviser to check which scheme and deadline apply to you.
6. Prepare and follow up
Use the checklist to record the year, invitation date, deadline and previous requests. Keep a copy of the form and proof of sending, and arrange to check the response. If the deadline has passed or a possible penalty is unclear, seek specific help. Our own assistance form is available; we do not submit an extension request for you.
Can I send your preparation download as an extension request?
No. Use the official form and the address printed on it. Our download only helps you gather information and follow up the response. Your partner must submit a separate request where necessary.

For each event, note the date, what happened and where the evidence is kept. Example: 3 October — letter received — correspondence folder.
Describe the solution you would like, such as an explanation of a deduction and repayment of the outstanding amount.
For example: which document is missing, who can provide it and what should I do first?
