Residence decisions, rejection and waiting for an answer

Read type, purpose and expiry on both card and decision. Regular extension, document renewal, replacement and change of purpose are different applications. For refusal or an obligation to leave, use the existing decision route immediately; a new application does not preserve a response deadline.

EU/EEA and Swiss citizens do not need an ordinary residence permit, but stays exceeding three months have conditions. A relative with another nationality may need EU-law verification; relatives of Dutch citizens do not automatically qualify for that route.

Record relationship, ages and the nationality/status of the person in the Netherlands. Regular partner residence, children, EU family and asylum family reunification have distinct routes. On the precise IND page check documents, income where required and timing; family ties do not automatically grant permission.

Record employee, self-employed, researcher or student, employer/institution and duration. Highly skilled migrant, GVVA, self-employment and study have separate conditions and applicants. Confirm who applies and whether a recognised sponsor is required; a job or admission alone is not residence or work permission.

Protection from persecution or serious harm follows the asylum procedure, not an ordinary work/partner MVV. Use current IND registration instructions; arrival location and previous applications can matter. Request appropriate assistance and an interpreter if needed. This guide does not assess asylum grounds.

First choose the purpose: biometrics, collecting a document, a residence endorsement, a return visa or the separate route for Ukraine or family reunification following asylum. Read that product’s conditions on the official appointment page. Call the IND for other services. An appointment is not an application or proof of a right of residence.

For biometrics, first obtain the relevant IND letter; appointments booked too early are cancelled. For collection, your document must be ready: follow the location in the IND message. Read the product checklist for your travel document, appointment code and existing card. Children under two use the photo-card route for biometrics; call the IND to collect a W2 document.
