Detailed explanation, checklist and sources

With a residence permit, report a move within the Netherlands to the municipality of your new address in time. It passes the address to IND. If you reported late, notify IND yourself as well. If moving abroad, inform IND before departure.

1. Identify the kind of move

This guidance concerns an address change with a Dutch residence permit. A move within the same municipality or to another Dutch municipality normally goes through the municipality of the new address. For a pending application, reception accommodation or missing registration, ask which procedure fits.

2. Report a domestic move to the municipality

You can report the move from four weeks before its date; do so no later than five days afterwards. Keep confirmation and check the registered address. With a timely municipal report, you need not notify IND again of the address change alone.

3. Notify IND if you were late

If the municipal report was late, also notify IND through its official reporting route. IND states four weeks for changes requiring notification. Do not wait longer after missing a deadline: report now, note the reason and ask what additional information is needed.

4. Check other changes separately

A new address may coincide with a relationship ending, a different sponsor or changed income. Municipal address notification does not replace these separate reports. Check affected residence conditions; moving alone neither creates a new permit nor extends it.

5. Check moving abroad

If moving abroad, notify IND before departure and also check the municipality's departure procedure. Children's address changes must be handled too. Leaving can affect residence; ask about your specific permit and plans instead of copying the domestic procedure.

6. Keep registration and notification evidence

Record the move date, old and new municipalities, reports and open questions below. The document stays local and changes no registration. Check that post can reach you, especially during a pending procedure. Use our own assistance route if your residence rights or a decision need assessment.

Is reporting to the municipality always enough?

For a timely reported domestic address change alone, IND receives the address from the municipality. If the report is late, inform IND yourself too. Other relevant changes and moving abroad have separate notification requirements.
