Apply to extend an extendable regular type-I permit from three months before expiry, preferably before it expires. First check the permit, purpose and responsible applicant. Asylum, EU residence and renewal of a permanent document use other routes.

1. Read the card and decision
This concerns extension of a Dutch regular temporary type-I permit. Type-III asylum and EU-law residence have separate IND procedures. A permanent residence document can expire and require a different renewal procedure. Do not choose solely by the date printed on a card.
2. Check whether extension is possible
You must still meet your residence conditions, have a valid travel document and your main residence in the Netherlands. Public order and accurate previous information matter. Orientation year, au pair, Working Holiday, cultural exchange and internship/practical training cannot simply be extended. A changed purpose may require changing the permit.
3. Plan the application date
Prepare early but submit from three months before expiry. If already expired, act immediately. IND specifies up to four weeks after expiry to preserve continuity without a residence gap; this is not general permission to work or travel. After four weeks, apply promptly with an explanation. After two years or more, a new application is needed, possibly with an MVV.
4. Choose applicant and form
Only the recognised sponsor applies through Portaal Zakelijk for highly skilled migrants, scientific researchers and higher-education students. Agree who submits and obtain proof. Other eligible cases use DigiD or the correct written IND form. Use the written form if the permit expired or the online route does not work.
5. Prepare evidence and payment
Use the document list for your precise purpose: passport, current card and relationship, income, employment or study evidence where required. Check legalisation and translation of foreign documents. Fees depend on the application; use the current IND amount. Keep application, attachments, payment and receipt privately.
6. Track decision, residence and document
IND states 90 days for this regular extension and may extend the period by notice. Track Mijn IND and respond to document requests on time. Check residence endorsement, work rights and travel separately if uncertain; a receipt does not prove everything. Approval is followed by collection instructions. Can every permit be extended this way?
No. This route concerns extendable regular type-I permits. Asylum, EU law, permanent documents and non-extendable purposes require another route.
