What should I do about a fake police officer calling or at my door?
What would you like help with?
Detailed explanation, checklist and sources
Does someone claiming to be police want to collect money, bank cards or jewellery for ‘safekeeping’? Hand nothing over. If a visit is arranged, the person is at your door or has just left, call 112 immediately. For an earlier incident without current urgency call 0900-8844.

1. Decide whether to call 112 now
This concerns scammers impersonating Dutch police to obtain money or possessions. Call 112 for an arranged visit, someone at the door or a fake officer who has just left; do not wait for theft. Give the address, time, description and vehicle details if known. Stay safe and do not follow the person.

2. Check the story safely
Police do not collect your money, PINs or jewellery for safekeeping. A uniform, officer's name, familiar telephone number or agreed code does not prove authenticity. Do not let a suspected scammer in. For doubts about this visit, ask the 112 control room to check. Do not use a verification number supplied by the caller.
3. Limit further financial loss
If you handed over bank cards or allowed banking access, contact your bank immediately through its official app or known number. Explain what was shared and which payments appear; request appropriate blocks. Never give more codes to someone offering to ‘rescue’ money. A police report alone does not block your bank card.
4. Preserve facts and evidence
Record the timeline, telephone number, claimed name, story and missing items. Keep messages, payment evidence and available doorbell footage; ask neighbours to preserve recordings if relevant. Record only what you actually saw or heard. Do not confront the suspect to gather evidence. Share sensitive banking or identity information only through secure police or bank channels.
5. Report an attempt too
An unsuccessful attempt can also be reported formally. After urgent assistance, call police on 0900-8844 and ask about reporting a fake officer. The official page provides a preparation form; sometimes officers can take a statement at home. A home visit is not guaranteed. Our checklist or chat does not file a police report.
6. Arrange support and follow-up
Keep the report number and arrangements with police and bank. Ask about support and victim rights and report further contact. There is no need for shame: targeted deception can affect anyone. A report does not guarantee investigation or reimbursement; discuss compensation separately with the bank, insurer or legal adviser.
Can I report this if I handed nothing over?
Yes. Police also ask people to report attempts by fake officers. Call 112 for an arranged visit or someone at the door; use 0900-8844 for an earlier attempt without current urgency. Your own notes prepare a report but are not the official report.

For each event, note the date, what happened and where the evidence is kept. Example: 3 October — letter received — correspondence folder.
Describe the solution you would like, such as an explanation of a deduction and repayment of the outstanding amount.
For example: which document is missing, who can provide it and what should I do first?
Record the date and its source. If unknown, note this and check promptly. This tool does not calculate or monitor deadlines.
After your conversation
