What if someone uses my identity for a bill or contract?
What would you like help with?
Detailed explanation, checklist and sources
Limit further harm, retain evidence and dispute an unfamiliar bill with both the business and debt collector. Arrange the appropriate police report and CMI notification separately. Reporting does not automatically erase a debt or stop court proceedings.

1. Limit further harm immediately
This guide concerns suspected identity misuse in the Netherlands. If bank or card details are involved, contact your bank immediately through its known official channel and discuss blocking and unfamiliar transactions. Secure affected accounts with new unique passwords and two-factor authentication. Report lost identity documents to the appropriate authority; a lost Dutch ID card also needs attention to its DigiD login function. Do not use contact links in the suspicious message.

2. Build a factual evidence record
Keep original messages, bills, reminders, transactions and contract information securely. Make a timeline: what did you discover when, which organisation identifies which order, and what did you do yourself? Separate facts from suspicions. Ask the business for application, order and delivery information supporting its claim and retain proof of sending. Do not upload an identity document, passwords or your full file to this website.

3. Dispute the specific bill
If you did not enter into the contract, state in writing which bill you dispute and why. Ask the business to prove the agreement and send your dispute to any involved debt collector too. Do not pay blindly or ignore correspondence. If deception led you to confirm, pay, sign or forward something yourself, have the legal consequences assessed: suspected fraud does not automatically invalidate every contract. Use the draft only for accurate facts.
4. Use the correct police-report route
For an identity-fraud report, Politie.nl directs you to a station appointment through 0900-8844; this is not the general online reporting route. Bring your timeline and supporting material and ask what information is required. A related offence such as online purchase fraud may have a different route. Keep the report number and provide new facts. Call 112 for immediate danger; our preparation is not a police report or guarantee of investigation. If you are misunderstood or reporting stalls, ask for AVIM identity specialists. Also bring evidence that you were elsewhere and any witnesses; Slachtofferhulp Nederland can support you if the impact is severe or agencies do not take you seriously.
5. Choose the appropriate CMI route
Use the CMI decision guide on RvIG.nl for a misused ID copy, orders in your name, a fake profile or other identity fraud. CMI gives advice and may help organisations repair consequences; it does not replace a police report. According to CMI, notification that your ID copy was leaked, without known misuse, does not yet require reporting through that form. Remain alert to phishing and discuss replacement with the municipality if appropriate.

6. Monitor replies and legal deadlines
Keep the business and collector informed of your dispute and relevant report details. Request written confirmation of investigation and any pause; requesting one does not guarantee suspension. Read all new letters. For a summons, attachment or persistent registration, obtain prompt advice on the particular procedure and deadline, even while CMI is helping. Keep replies and use our own help request for legal preparation; nothing is sent automatically.

Draft: disputing a bill involving suspected identity misuse
Use only if you did not enter into the stated contract. Complete the facts and placeholders and remove incorrect options. This is not a police report, debt admission or deadline suspension. Send it yourself to verified business/collector addresses, keep evidence and omit unnecessary ID copies.

Does a CMI notification automatically stop debt collection?
No. Tell the business and collector about your dispute yourself and ask for written confirmation of any pause. A notification or police report is not a court ruling on the bill. Never ignore a summons or another procedural deadline.

For each event, note the date, what happened and where the evidence is kept. Example: 3 October — letter received — correspondence folder.
Describe the solution you would like, such as an explanation of a deduction and repayment of the outstanding amount.
For example: which document is missing, who can provide it and what should I do first?
