I clicked a phishing link: what now?
What would you like help with?
Detailed explanation, checklist and sources
What happened next matters: clicking alone differs from entering details, paying or opening software.
On this page
1. Stop and identify actions
Close the suspicious page and enter nothing further. Record whether you only clicked, entered details, paid, opened an attachment or installed remote-access software. SMS, WhatsApp and QR codes can lead to fake sites too; a familiar logo proves nothing.
2. Call bank or provider
If bank details were shared or money sent, immediately call the bank using an independently checked number. Ask it to check transactions and, if needed, block the account/card or stop payments. For other credentials contact the genuine provider. Never give codes to the sender or send your bank card.
3. Check the device
After a suspicious attachment or software installation, have the device checked for malware. Do not bank on it until clean. Change affected and reused passwords from a safe device and enable two-step verification. Discuss this with the bank. A click without entering details or downloading is not automatically account or money theft; remain alert.
4. Preserve evidence
Keep the original message, sender, link, time, screenshots and payment details. Record your own actions and subsequent unfamiliar transactions. Do not reopen a dangerous link for evidence. Keep bank/provider correspondence; do not upload passwords or full bank statements here.
5. Choose the report
Police's detailed page allows online reporting only for payment-request/Tikkie fraud and phishing for bank details. For other credentials or uncertainty call 0900-8844 for an appointment. Follow the current police selector; our checklist submits nothing. Call 112 in immediate danger.
6. Track recovery
Keep confirmation and the report number, report new transactions and follow bank instructions. Reporting guarantees neither investigation nor repayment. Blackmail quoting an old password does not itself prove recordings exist; do not pay on that claim and secure the account. For actual identity misuse or hacked email also use our separate recovery guidance.
I only clicked: must I block my account?
Clicking without entering data or downloading is not the same as bank fraud. Stay alert; call the bank and take suitable security steps if details were shared, money paid or software is suspicious.

For each event, note the date, what happened and where the evidence is kept. Example: 3 October — letter received — correspondence folder.
Describe the solution you would like, such as an explanation of a deduction and repayment of the outstanding amount.
For example: which document is missing, who can provide it and what should I do first?
