Registering a sole proprietorship with KVK: what should I prepare?
What would you like help with?
Detailed explanation, checklist and sources
First check whether registration is required and whether a Dutch eenmanszaak suits your situation. Then complete the official KVK form yourself using DigiD and book an appointment. Keep registration, public information and tax status separate.

1. Check registration duty and legal form
KVK considers whether you independently supply or prepare goods or services, earn money from them and regularly supply people beyond family and friends. Discuss uncertainty with KVK. This page covers a sole proprietorship; a vof, bv or foreign business may need another procedure. A client's request for a KVK number does not itself determine your status.
2. Describe your activities clearly
Write down what you supply, to whom, for what payment and from which date. For example: ‘I repair bicycles for private customers and sell parts.’ This is a fictional drafting example, not an approved SBI code. KVK determines the appropriate code from your activities. Check your trade name with the official Naamchecker; one sole proprietorship can have several activities and trade names.
3. Decide which information becomes public
A sole proprietorship can restrict public access to its visiting address, but needs a public postal address different from both its home and visiting addresses. This does not make you untraceable everywhere: authorised parties may retain access and earlier listings do not automatically disappear. Check the business email and website too: they are public. Do not provide private addresses or identity documents here.
4. Prepare the official appointment
Complete the official form and plan registration around your actual start: from one week before until no later than one week after. Earlier identity verification is possible up to three months before starting; this does not immediately complete registration. Bring valid ID and documents listed in the confirmation, such as a lease or franchise agreement. No DigiD or an unusual situation? Ask KVK for the appropriate procedure; do not borrow an account.
5. Check the fee and payment procedure
The one-off registration fee is €85.15, checked on 14 October 2026; rates may change annually. After completion at a KVK office, the invoice arrives by email. An extract is a separate choice: first check whether the recipient needs one. Verify an unexpected payment request directly with KVK; a familiar sender name alone does not prove authenticity.
6. Check registration and next obligations
Check the name, activities, address choices and start date when registering. A KVK number is not a VAT identification number or a guarantee of business tax deductions: the Belastingdienst assesses tax status separately. Record settled points and open questions. Use our existing assistance request for a legal uncertainty; it does not replace registration or send anything to KVK.
Does registration automatically make me a business for every tax?
No. KVK passes on information, but the Belastingdienst assesses tax status separately. Our checklist is preparation only, not registration, SBI approval or personalised tax advice.

For each event, note the date, what happened and where the evidence is kept. Example: 3 October — letter received — correspondence folder.
Describe the solution you would like, such as an explanation of a deduction and repayment of the outstanding amount.
For example: which document is missing, who can provide it and what should I do first?
Record the date and its source. If unknown, note this and check promptly. This tool does not calculate or monitor deadlines.
After your conversation
These are your own notes. Confirm agreements with the other person; these notes do not prove their agreement.
This is your preparation, not a submitted request, objection or legally reviewed document. A tick records only your own progress. Check the procedure and deadline in the original letter.
