WW unemployment benefit refused: what can you do?

What would you like help with?

Detailed explanation, checklist and sources

Has your Dutch unemployment benefit application been rejected? Compare UWV’s reason with your employment details and lodge an objection in time if you believe the decision is incorrect. An objection does not automatically entitle you to a payment. Therefore, also check what you need to make ends meet in the coming weeks.

1. Determine why UWV does not grant unemployment benefit

Read the entire decision, including the explanation about objections. Note the assessment period and the exact reason for refusal. UWV considers, among other things, insurance coverage, weeks worked, loss of hours and pay, availability for paid work, and how the employment ended. The absence of one requirement can be decisive; simply being unemployed is not enough.

2. Check weeks, hours and dismissal details

Generally, you must have worked in at least 26 of the previous 36 weeks. Illness or leave may affect the assessment of that period. If you worked an average of at least 10 hours per week, this normally concerns a loss of at least 5 hours and the associated pay; if you worked fewer than 10 hours, it concerns at least half. Compare contracts, payslips and schedules with the decision. A settlement agreement does not automatically exclude unemployment benefit. Have the circumstances assessed if UWV refers to culpable unemployment.

3. Protect the objection deadline

For an unemployment benefit decision, the objection deadline is in principle six weeks. Immediately check the date and submission instructions in your letter, and do not wait for a telephone conversation or all supporting documents. If you need more time for the reasons, submit a provisional objection within the deadline with the other required information. UWV will then give you a deadline to supplement your reasons. A request for an explanation is not in itself an objection.

4. Link each ground of objection to evidence

For each disputed issue, set out three things: what UWV establishes, what you believe is different, and which document shows this. State your details, the date and the decision against which you are objecting; sign a letter. Use the official submission method stated in the decision and keep the acknowledgement of receipt. Request any missing case-file documents. The checklist below helps you organise your documents; the download is preparation, not a submitted notice of objection.

5. Act separately in case of acute financial need

The original decision remains in force during the objection procedure. Immediately discuss with the municipality what support may be available if you have no income; a refused unemployment benefit does not automatically mean that you will receive social assistance. In demonstrable urgent circumstances, you can ask the administrative court for an interim measure while an objection or appeal is pending. Substantiate why you cannot wait with your current income, available resources and necessary expenses. Approval is not certain, and costs may apply to the court proceedings.

6. Prepare the next step

Respond to UWV requests within the set deadline and prepare for any hearing with your timeline and evidence. If you disagree with the decision on your objection, check the possibility of appeal: generally, the deadline is again six weeks. Seek targeted help if in doubt, if a deadline is approaching, or if the dismissal circumstances are complicated. You can request an assessment of your situation through our help request form; an application to us does not replace an objection to UWV.

Your timeline and evidence

List events and contacts. Note where you keep the evidence; no upload is needed.

What goes in my timeline?

Record what happened, when, the response and where to find the letter, message or photo. Mark uncertain dates.

Is my evidence sent?

No. You only note where it is kept. No files are uploaded or sent automatically.

How do I save my timeline?

Your entries are not saved automatically. Choose Save and continue later to store this preparation, including your timeline, in My overview. Wait for confirmation and save new changes again. You can also download a Word file without an account.

Up to 20 events. Choose a different position for an event to change the order.

0 / 6 · Checked or collected

For each event, note the date, what happened and where the evidence is kept. Example: 3 October — letter received — correspondence folder.

Describe the solution you would like, such as an explanation of a deduction and repayment of the outstanding amount.

For example: which document is missing, who can provide it and what should I do first?

Record the date and its source. If unknown, note this and check promptly. This tool does not calculate or monitor deadlines.

These are your own notes. Confirm agreements with the other person; these notes do not prove their agreement.

This is your preparation, not a submitted request, objection or legally reviewed document. A tick records only your own progress. Check the procedure and deadline in the original letter.

Frequently asked questions

Can I lodge an objection before my file is complete?

Yes. Submit a provisional objection in time with the required information, and then provide the reasons within the deadline set by UWV. Calling only to ask for an explanation does not protect the deadline.

Will I receive unemployment benefit while my objection is pending?

Not automatically. The refusal decision remains in force. In an acute emergency, you must separately discuss what help is possible and whether a request to the interim-relief judge is appropriate.

Is a settlement agreement always a reason to refuse unemployment benefit?

No. The agreement and the circumstances of the termination must be assessed, together with the other unemployment benefit requirements.
