Debts and debt collection in the Netherlands: overview and help

What would you like help with?

In the event of a summons, garnishment or threatened eviction, quick help is needed. Do not wait until all other debts have been sorted out.

Being unable to pay an invoice is different from disputing it. Make that distinction before responding. If you have several debts, a complete list helps you make realistic payment arrangements.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to pay the amount in a debt collection letter immediately?

First check what the amount is being claimed for and whether the invoice, payments and costs are correct. Do not ignore the letter. Challenge an incorrect amount with a clear explanation and evidence, rather than merely saying you will not pay.

What if I cannot pay multiple invoices?

Make an overview of creditors, amounts, income and fixed expenses. Contact your municipality early for debt counselling. Do not agree to an arrangement that you cannot maintain based on your overview.

How do I check announced wage garnishment?

Keep the documents and find out who handles the garnishment. Have calculations and the data used checked if you are unsure. A debt collection letter alone does not provide a complete picture of the status of garnishment proceedings.
