How can I recognise a fake Dutch CJIB fine?
What would you like help with?
Detailed explanation, checklist and sources
Do not pay through an unexpected email, text or app message about a CJIB fine. CJIB does not send these fine or arrears messages digitally. Open cjib.nl yourself to check account details and, for traffic fines, the DigiD digital portal. A paper letter can also be forged.

1. Check the kind of message
This guidance concerns messages pretending to come from the Dutch CJIB. CJIB says email, text or app messages about a fine, reminder or arrears are false. This does not mean every other digital confirmation from a public body is automatically fake.
2. Open the official website yourself
Do not use payment or login links in the suspicious message. Type cjib.nl yourself and navigate from the official website. Keep the sender, receipt date and a screenshot for your own checks. Do not send DigiD codes or bank details to the sender.
3. Check the bank account and traffic fine
Compare the account number in a received letter with CJIB's official details. Check a traffic fine in the Digitaal Loket. A leased car may require an additional check. Not every other CJIB debt appears there; ask CJIB directly to confirm if uncertain.
4. Do not rely on a logo alone
A familiar logo, correct name or plausible envelope is not proof by itself. CJIB also recommends checking the envelope, but a forgery can look convincing. Combine this with account and official case checks before paying.
5. What if you have already paid?
If you transferred money to scammers, contact your bank immediately about possible next steps and report fraud to the police. Keep the message and payment evidence. Recovery is not guaranteed; use official contact details for further assistance.
6. Keep evidence and check real deadlines
Record completed checks and remaining uncertainties below. A suspected fake fine does not remove a genuine CJIB case or appeal deadline. If the fine is real, use the appropriate payment or appeal guidance or our own personal-assistance route.
Is a fine always fake if it is absent from the digital portal?
No. The portal helps check traffic fines; it does not rule out every other CJIB claim. Contact CJIB through its official website if unsure. Avoid payment or login links from the suspicious message.

For each event, note the date, what happened and where the evidence is kept. Example: 3 October — letter received — correspondence folder.
Describe the solution you would like, such as an explanation of a deduction and repayment of the outstanding amount.
For example: which document is missing, who can provide it and what should I do first?
