How do I get a copy of my income tax return or assessment?

Find the correct document and tax year in Mijn Belastingdienst. An online return and a final assessment have different availability periods. A paper request may be needed for returns filed on paper, using the app or for older years.

On this page

1. Which document do you need?

This page concerns Dutch income tax returns, not reports to the police. First ask whether the receiving organisation needs your own return, a final assessment or an income statement, and for which tax year. These are different documents. Checking first helps you avoid sharing the wrong financial document.

2. Copy of an online return

Find an online return in Mijn Belastingdienst under the relevant year or the Aangifte inkomstenbelasting message and save it as a PDF. Online copies are available for up to five years back. Check that the copy is the latest submitted version. A PDF may also have been created before submission, so it does not by itself prove that you filed a return.

3. App, paper or an older year

A return filed using the app or on paper does not appear as a return copy in Mijn Belastingdienst. You can create a PDF in the app as long as it has not been deleted or reset. For paper returns or older years, you can request a paper copy for the previous fourteen tax years.

4. Copy of a final assessment

Final assessments are available in Mijn Belastingdienst for up to seven years back, regardless of how you filed. Find the Definitieve aanslag inkomstenbelasting message for the correct year. Paper copies of older assessments can be requested for up to twelve tax years back. If needed, also check the Berichtenbox in MijnOverheid.

5. Requesting a paper copy

Request a paper copy by calling the BelastingTelefoon or writing to your tax office. The official guidance states that copies arrive within eight weeks, often within ten working days. Check the tax office's address through the source before sending a letter. The draft below only requests a copy; it does not object to the document's contents.

6. Check the copy you receive

Check the document type, tax year and completeness. Store the copy securely and share only what the requesting organisation actually needs. Our checklist and draft letter are not official returns, assessments or income statements. If an external deadline is approaching, ask the recipient which alternative it will accept temporarily.

Draft letter: request a copy of a tax return or assessment

Use this where a paper copy is appropriate. Enter the document type and year, check your tax office's address and sign. This is neither a tax return nor an objection. Do not attach your entire financial administration.

Can I use a copy as an income statement?

That depends on the receiving organisation's requirements. An assessment may sometimes be accepted instead, but your tax return and an official income statement are different documents. Ask in advance which document and year are accepted.

Your timeline and evidence

List events and contacts. Note where you keep the evidence; no upload is needed.

What goes in my timeline?

Record what happened, when, the response and where to find the letter, message or photo. Mark uncertain dates.

Is my evidence sent?

No. You only note where it is kept. No files are uploaded or sent automatically.

How do I save my timeline?

Your entries are not saved automatically. Choose Save and continue later to store this preparation, including your timeline, in My overview. Wait for confirmation and save new changes again. You can also download a Word file without an account.

For each event, note the date, what happened and where the evidence is kept. Example: 3 October — letter received — correspondence folder.

Describe the solution you would like, such as an explanation of a deduction and repayment of the outstanding amount.

For example: which document is missing, who can provide it and what should I do first?

Record the date and its source. If unknown, note this and check promptly. This tool does not calculate or monitor deadlines.

After your conversation

These are your own notes. Confirm agreements with the other person; these notes do not prove their agreement.

This is your preparation, not a submitted request, objection or legally reviewed document. A tick records only your own progress. Check the procedure and deadline in the original letter.
