Detailed explanation, checklist and sources

For a personal income tax or Zvw refund, change your account in Mijn Belastingdienst. Use a current account in your own name. There is an official form if you cannot access the portal; a foreign account follows a separate procedure.

On this page

1. Choose the correct type of change

This page concerns the bank account for a personal Dutch income tax refund or a refund of the contribution under the Zorgverzekeringswet (Zvw). This is a different action from changing the account used for direct debits. Establish what you want the account used for before choosing a form.

2. Check the account

Use a current account in your own name; a savings account is not accepted for this purpose. There is a separate official procedure for a foreign account. Your bank's switching service does not automatically update the refund account registered with the Belastingdienst. Enter bank and identification details only in the official environment.

3. Notify the change through the official route

Go directly to Mijn Belastingdienst, open Mijn gegevens and under Rekeningnummer choose the option to provide your account number. Answer the questions and confirm. You will immediately see whether the change succeeded or is still being processed. Keep your own note of the date; this website's checklist does not submit an account change.

4. Cannot access the portal?

If you cannot access Mijn Belastingdienst, use the official Opgaaf rekeningnummer particulieren form. Complete it, print it, sign it and send it as instructed. Do not replace that form with your own letter. For a foreign account, check the separate procedure first.

5. Check processing and other payments

The Belastingdienst states that a confirmation letter will arrive within three weeks. If you receive toeslagen, the new account will also be used for those payments. This does not change the direct debit for a provisional assessment. A payment may still reach the old account; contact the BelastingTelefoon if you need its use to stop immediately.

6. Keep only what you need

Record the request date, chosen route, status and confirmation. Do not store your BSN, DigiD or full account number in our general preparation tool. Money already sent to an old account is a separate follow-up issue. If a problem persists, our own assistance form helps you prepare a specific request for help.

Will the direct debit account change too?

No. The Belastingdienst does not automatically use this refund-account change for the direct debit on your provisional assessment. Check that payment route separately, even if confirmation of your new refund account has already arrived.
