When can I take emergency or short-absence leave?

Detailed explanation, checklist and sources

Dutch employees may need brief paid leave for an urgent, unexpected or exceptional personal situation. Notify your employer promptly. The necessary duration and collective rules matter; entitlement is not automatically a fixed day off.

1. Which situations qualify?

This covers emergencies, obligations that can only be fulfilled during work, and exceptional personal circumstances. Examples include collecting a suddenly ill child, a partner giving birth, a burst pipe, necessary medical attendance that cannot take place outside work or necessary accompaniment. A close relative's death and voting only possible during work may also qualify.

2. How long can leave last?

Leave lasts as long as reasonably necessary: perhaps hours, or several days to arrange a funeral. There is no general yearly hourly maximum. This does not mean unlimited time off: record necessary tasks and expected return. A collective agreement may provide further rules.

3. Must I obtain advance permission?

Notify leave as soon as possible with a brief reason and expected duration. The employer cannot refuse a reasonable request. Follow the workplace emergency notification procedure and confirm in writing afterwards. This draft does not replace urgent notification.

4. What happens to my pay?

The baseline is continued salary. Check collective agreements and arrangements with the works council or staff representatives, which may differ. Ask which rule payroll applies. Do not accept unpaid-leave or holiday recording without checking.

5. What evidence should I keep?

The employer may afterwards request evidence that leave was necessary. Keep an appointment confirmation, school message or emergency repair invoice, for example. Share appropriate information, not an unsolicited medical file. Record notification time, contact and return arrangements.

6. What if I need more time?

Further care may qualify for care leave; longer bereavement or other time off may depend on collective arrangements or agreement. Those leave types have different eligibility and pay. Ask for written reasons in a dispute and consult HR, a union or legal help; remain reachable and record changes.

Draft request: When can I take emergency or short-absence leave?

Complete the facts and check the applicable rules. This draft sends nothing and is not legal approval.

Is every doctor's appointment paid leave?

No. For example, the appointment must be necessary and only possible during working hours, or accompaniment must be necessary. Check the circumstances and collective rules; an appointment reasonably possible outside work may follow other arrangements.
