A permanent contract is the starting point
New tenants generally receive a contract for an indefinite period. An exception exists for certain groups and special rental situations, under which a temporary contract of up to 2 years may be possible.
Check the written notice
For a valid temporary lease, the landlord generally must notify you in writing 1 to 3 months before the end date that the lease is ending. If this is not done correctly or the contract is extended, a permanent contract may arise.
Older contracts and exceptions
Transitional rules may apply to temporary contracts from before 1 July 2024. Rentals under, for example, the Vacancy Act or rentals short in nature do not always follow the same rules.

Describe the solution you would like, such as an explanation of a deduction and repayment of the outstanding amount.

Frequently asked questions
May I, as a tenant, terminate early?
For many temporary residential lease agreements, the tenant may terminate early subject to the applicable notice period. Check the type of contract.
Does an extension automatically become a permanent contract?
For a regular temporary contract, an extension may mean that the lease continues for an indefinite period. Exceptional types of contracts may work differently.
