What should I do if I used the wrong payment reference for the Belastingdienst?
What would you like help with?
Detailed explanation, checklist and sources
Check which assessment or payment arrangement you meant to pay and which reference you used. The payment may have been applied to another debt. Contact the authority with specific details if the reference is unrecognised or a deadline is approaching; do not automatically wait for a refund.

1. Paying: first choose the correct assessment and channel
Before paying, check tax type, year, outstanding balance and payment deadline on the assessment/payment information. Retrieve it yourself in the official account. Copy the requested payment reference or number exactly; if missing, use the official lookup or overview. An assessment number is not interchangeable with a payment reference in every transfer. Overzicht betalen en ontvangen lets you pay offered amounts through iDEAL | Wero. This pays the complete offered amount, not individual payment-plan instalments. For bank transfers use the account in the official payment information and correct reference. The Tax Administration changed banks on 1 May 2026: verify current accounts with it and update old standing orders if necessary. Direct debit is not available for every tax; an existing mandate does not mean every assessment is collected automatically. Check mandate, amount and bank debit. Keep payment evidence and allow processing time. If a refund is also expected, request offsetting rather than deducting it yourself. For a wrong reference follow this page’s recovery steps; for financial difficulty use the appropriate payment-plan route, not an arbitrary self-selected instalment.
2. Compare the payment with the intended assessment
This guidance concerns a payment to the Dutch Belastingdienst with a missing or incorrect payment reference. Compare the bank transaction with the assessment or payment arrangement you intended to pay. Record the amount, payment date and reference used in your own records. Money leaving your account does not prove that this particular assessment has been paid.
3. Missing reference or one for another assessment of yours
With a missing reference or one belonging to another assessment of yours, processing depends on outstanding debts. If assessment payment deadlines have expired, the Belastingdienst may apply the amount to those debts; a letter follows within eight weeks. If there are no outstanding assessments, the official guidance states that a refund follows within eight weeks. If no refund account is on record, you will be asked to provide one.
4. The reference does not belong to your assessment
If the reference does not belong to any of your assessments, contact the BelastingTelefoon. Provide identification details only through official contact. Ask where the payment was applied and what action is needed. Do not enter your BSN or full payment reference in our general chat or public feedback.
5. More than one payment arrangement
Each payment arrangement has its own reference. If you use another arrangement's reference, the money is applied there and the intended arrangement remains unpaid. Check not only the amount, but also which arrangement has been reduced in the records. An agreement for one debt does not automatically apply to another.
6. Keep track of the original payment deadline
Do not automatically wait eight weeks if your payment deadline is approaching or an arrangement is at risk. Ask in time how the Belastingdienst is allocating the payment and what you should do meanwhile. Do not pay twice without checking or stop agreed instalments on your own initiative. The consequences depend on the specific payment, debt and response.
7. Prepare your enquiry
Use the official reference-finder tool where it supports your situation; not every arrangement can be looked up there. Otherwise, check the reference in your payment-arrangement letter and keep your enquiry notes and confirmation. Our preparation tool helps you have a focused conversation and track next steps; it does not reallocate a payment. If you receive a reminder, an enforcement order or have a substantive dispute, you can request appropriate help through our own assistance form.
Does a debit from my bank account mean the correct arrangement has been paid?
Not always. A payment carrying another arrangement's reference is applied to that arrangement. Have the allocation checked and record what payment is still needed for the intended arrangement.
