Can I object to a late-filing penalty for my Dutch tax return?
What would you like help with?
Detailed explanation, checklist and sources
A default penalty may follow when the return is filed after the demand deadline; official guidance states no penalty is imposed when there is no blame at all. Check the letter, stated deadline and correct channel. Act in time, keep proof and seek help if facts or amounts are disputed.

1. Identify the letter and stage
A default penalty may follow when the return is filed after the demand deadline; official guidance states no penalty is imposed when there is no blame at all. This guidance is for individuals in the Netherlands and only for the described Tax Administration letter. Check the heading, tax, year and reference; a Benefits Office letter follows a different procedure.
2. Check the date and required response
File any missing return; doing so does not replace an objection. Object within 6 weeks of the date on the assessment or penalty decision and explain the specific cause with evidence. If the penalty is on an income-tax assessment, use that assessment’s objection route; an objection to the assessment also covers the penalty. For a separate penalty decision, send a signed objection letter to the address on that decision. Always check the actual date and instruction in your own letter; this page does not calculate or guarantee an individual deadline.
3. Choose the official next step
Use the route stated in the letter. This website does not send or file anything automatically.
4. Prepare only relevant documents
Using the wrong procedure can cause extra costs, lost time or a more difficult evidential position. Make a short timeline and select only documents that support the requested information or your specific objection. Do not share a citizen service number, bank number or full letter text on this website.
5. Avoid the wrong response
Do not act on the title alone. Providing information, filing a return, paying, objecting to costs and objecting to an assessment are different procedures.
6. Keep proof and seek help if needed
Keep the letter, your response and the receipt together. Seek timely expert help when facts are disputed, the amount is substantial or a short deadline is approaching.
