What is payroll withholding on my payslip and how do I check it?
What would you like help with?
Detailed explanation, checklist and sources
Wage tax is an advance payment of income tax. Payslip withholding is not automatically your final annual tax. Check gross pay, taxable pay, credits and other deductions separately.

1. Use the same pay period
Gather the contract, payslip and bank payment for the same period. Check hours, gross components, pension contribution and net pay. Do not compare monthly and annual totals. A payslip is required at the first payment and when pay or payroll levies change.
2. Distinguish the amounts
The loonheffing line generally concerns withheld wage tax and national-insurance contributions. The wider payroll-levies concept also includes employee insurance and Zvw. Employer costs are not all employee deductions; ask the basis of any unclear item.
3. Check the tax credit
The payroll tax credit reduces withholding; it is not extra wages. With simultaneous incomes, apply it to at most one income. Check statements and arrange application or cessation with the payer, not by altering a net amount yourself.
4. Compare all income
Even one payer applying the credit does not guarantee the final result: payers do not automatically know your total annual income. More income may mean a higher rate or less credit. Use the separate AOW/pension guide and a provisional assessment for annual estimates.
5. Ask about differences
Ask payroll in writing which pay base, period, credit and deductions were used. Provide only relevant documents. Lower net pay alone does not prove an error. Ask for a corrected statement if an error is confirmed; request our help if a dispute remains.
6. Check annual reconciliation
After year-end compare all annual statements with the prefilled return. Withheld wage tax is credited against income tax. A refund or additional payment may follow. This preparation calculates no personal net wage and submits no return or complaint.
Will filing refund all wage tax?
No. It is prepaid tax credited against your final annual liability. The difference can go either way; a refund is not guaranteed.
