Detailed explanation, checklist and sources

Use the official Dutch motor vehicle tax (mrb) calculator. Check vehicle type, fuel, province and weight. Since 1 July 2026 it uses massa rijklaar, the mass in running order. This page prepares you and calculates no amount.

1. Define your comparison

Are you buying a car or checking a bill? Compare identical vehicle details and tax periods. A monthly debit is not a quarterly amount. This guidance concerns Dutch mrb, not bpm or car insurance.

2. Collect the details

Use the registration card or advertisement. Check vehicle type, fuel and massa rijklaar through the RDW vehicle register; also record your province. A diesel may attract a particulate surcharge. Use the relevant fields in the official calculator.

3. Use the correct weight

Since 1 July 2026 the calculator uses massa rijklaar. If an old paper registration document only shows massa ledig voertuig, the Belastingdienst says to add 100 kg or find massa rijklaar at RDW. Do not add another 100 kg to massa rijklaar. The change of weight field does not itself increase the tax.

4. Check special situations

Check current official conditions for electric or hybrid vehicles, classic cars, campers and business vehicles. Applying for a special rate or exemption does not make it apply automatically. Some schemes changed on 1 July 2026; do not reuse an old rate or assume a universal discount. Vans qualifying for the business rate have a temporary reduction from 1 July 2026 until 1 January 2027, included in the calculator. Since 1 January 2026, passenger cars emitting 1–50 grams of CO₂ per kilometre pay the same rate as petrol cars.

5. Calculate for the same period

Open the official calculator through the source below. Record inputs, period and calculation date. The Belastingdienst warns that browser cache can show old rates: refresh as instructed on that page. The current result does not guarantee next year’s amount.

6. Resolve a difference

Check weight, vehicle type, surcharge, period and the start of a special scheme if results differ. Keep the bill and calculation locally. Ask the Belastingdienst for clarification or request specific help through our assistance route. Your calculation changes neither the bill nor its deadline.

Must I always add 100 kg?

No. Use massa rijklaar directly. Adding 100 kg applies only when starting from massa ledig voertuig on the old document. Check RDW if unsure.
