1. Identify the letter and stage

Collection interest concerns late payment and generally runs from the day after the due date until payment is received; the rate and calculation can change. This guidance is for individuals in the Netherlands and only for the described Tax Administration letter. Check the heading, tax, year and reference; a Benefits Office letter follows a different procedure.

2. Check the date and required response

Check the principal, original due date, receipt date of each payment, interest period and the rate stated in the interest letter. Always check the actual date and instruction in your own letter; this page does not calculate or guarantee an individual deadline.

3. Choose the official next step

Check the principal, original due date, receipt date of each payment, interest period and the rate stated in the interest letter. Use the route stated in the letter. This website does not send or file anything automatically. Granted payment deferral does not automatically prevent this interest. Under current official guidance, collection interest of €49 or less on the assessment is not payable if this is your only or final payment of that assessment. If there is an error, you may object in writing within 6 weeks of the interest letter date; include the assessment number, interest amount, grounds, name and signature.

4. Prepare only relevant documents

Using the wrong procedure can cause extra costs, lost time or a more difficult evidential position. Make a short timeline and select only documents that support the requested information or your specific objection. Do not share a citizen service number, bank number or full letter text on this website.

5. Avoid the wrong response

Do not act on the title alone. Providing information, filing a return, paying, objecting to costs and objecting to an assessment are different procedures.

6. Keep proof and seek help if needed

Keep the letter, your response and the receipt together. Seek timely expert help when facts are disputed, the amount is substantial or a short deadline is approaching.

What should I do first?

First check the type of letter, tax year, date and exact request. Then follow the official route in the letter and keep the evidence.
