Detailed explanation, checklist and sources

Tax interest may apply when an assessment could not be set in time, for example after a late or incorrect return; rules differ by tax and year. Check the letter, stated deadline and correct channel. Act in time, keep proof and seek help if facts or amounts are disputed.

1. Identify the letter and stage

Tax interest may apply when an assessment could not be set in time, for example after a late or incorrect return; rules differ by tax and year. This guidance is for individuals in the Netherlands and only for the described Tax Administration letter. Check the heading, tax, year and reference; a Benefits Office letter follows a different procedure.

2. Check the date and required response

Check the tax year, filing date, changes, interest period and amount on the assessment and use its objection route if you identify an error. Always check the actual date and instruction in your own letter; this page does not calculate or guarantee an individual deadline.

3. Choose the official next step

Check the tax year, filing date, changes, interest period and amount on the assessment and use its objection route if you identify an error. Use the route stated in the letter. This website does not send or file anything automatically.

4. Prepare only relevant documents

Using the wrong procedure can cause extra costs, lost time or a more difficult evidential position. Make a short timeline and select only documents that support the requested information or your specific objection. Do not share a citizen service number, bank number or full letter text on this website.

5. Avoid the wrong response

Do not act on the title alone. Providing information, filing a return, paying, objecting to costs and objecting to an assessment are different procedures.

6. Keep proof and seek help if needed

Keep the letter, your response and the receipt together. Seek timely expert help when facts are disputed, the amount is substantial or a short deadline is approaching.

7. Which interest period and rate apply?

A return filed before 1 May after the tax year avoids tax interest if Belastingdienst accepts the figures unchanged. A filing extension does not exempt you from interest. Check the official explanation for your assessment type. For an ordinary assessment the interest period generally starts on 1 July after the tax year; an unchanged return also has a cap of 19 weeks after receipt. An additional assessment has a different end date. The ordinary end limit is six weeks after the assessment date; for an additional assessment it is one month after that date. The income-tax rate for the part of the interest period from 1 January 2026 is 5%; for 2025 it was 6.5%. Split periods spanning a rate change. A refund does not automatically entitle you to interest: separate conditions apply. Did Belastingdienst already hold the money during part of the charged period? Check the special reduction procedure; it is unavailable if charged tax interest is below €100. Keep payment dates and assessments. This does not replace a timely objection under your assessment.
