Do I have warranty rights without a receipt in the Netherlands?
What would you like help with?
Detailed explanation, checklist and sources
Yes. Losing the receipt does not by itself remove your Dutch statutory warranty rights. You still need to establish what you bought, from which seller and when.

1. Find alternative purchase evidence
Look for an order confirmation, invoice, digital receipt or customer account record. A bank payment may not identify the particular product: combine it with correspondence or product details. Hide unrelated bank transactions before sharing evidence.
2. Cash payment or an unreadable receipt
Ask whether the shop can retrieve a copy using the date, amount, branch and product. Someone present at the purchase may be a witness. Cash payment or a faded receipt does not automatically end your rights. Without any evidence connecting the purchase to this seller, the seller need not repair or replace the item.
3. Check whether the defect is covered
This concerns a consumer purchase from a business under Dutch law. The product must fall short of reasonable expectations; ordinary wear or damage you caused is not automatically covered. There is no universal two-year statutory warranty limit. Price, age, product type, promises and normal use matter. Evidence of the defect's cause is separate from evidence of purchase.
4. Ask the seller for a solution
Report the defect promptly in writing; for a consumer product, reporting within two months of discovering it is in any event timely. Identify the product, purchase date, defect and evidence. Request an appropriate free remedy, normally repair or replacement, within a reasonable time. The seller remains responsible even if it involves the manufacturer. Keep the correspondence.
5. Deal with a refusal
Ask whether the seller disputes the purchase, the defect or merely insists on the original receipt. Supply the missing evidence. A missing receipt alone does not justify rejecting statutory rights where the purchase is established. If unresolved, seek an assessment of a final deadline, price reduction or cancellation; an immediate refund is not always available. Prepare your file with the checklist and use our help request if needed.
6. Distinguish warranty from changing your mind
Returning a sound item to a physical shop because you changed your mind is generally voluntary: the shop may require a receipt. Online purchases may have a separate withdrawal right with exceptions. Additional manufacturer warranty conditions cannot reduce your statutory rights against the seller.

Describe the solution you would like, such as an explanation of a deduction and repayment of the outstanding amount.
