Social assistance benefit refused: what now?
What would you like help with?
Detailed explanation, checklist and sources
Has your application for Dutch general social assistance been rejected? Check which requirement the municipality believes is missing and lodge an objection within the objection deadline if you disagree with the decision. Gather evidence about the period assessed. In case of acute financial need, a separate urgent step is also needed; an objection does not automatically result in payment.

1. Read the exact reason and period
Does the refusal concern income, assets, residence, your joint household, or missing information? Note what the municipality establishes and for which period. Distinguish between a substantive refusal and a decision not to process the application because information is missing. If anything is unclear, request the decision and the underlying documents. Do not wait until the objection deadline has passed.
2. Test your situation against the conditions
General social assistance is a safety net for those who meet the conditions, including living in the Netherlands, having an appropriate residence status, being at least 18 years old, and having insufficient income and assets. Another suitable benefit may take priority. For partners, joint resources may count; an owner-occupied home requires a separate assessment. The applicable limits and exceptions depend on your situation and the period. Therefore, use current official information and the calculation accompanying your decision, rather than an isolated amount found online.
3. Gather evidence concerning the disputed facts
Keep the application, requests for additional documents, what you submitted, and acknowledgements of receipt. Organise, for example, bank statements, income information and documents about your living situation. Explain unclear credits with verifiable documents. For each issue, state what the municipality assumes, why you dispute it, and what evidence supports your explanation. A general statement that you need money does not answer a specific ground for refusal.
4. Lodge an objection with the municipality
For a municipal social assistance decision, lodge an objection with the municipality, not with UWV. In principle, you have six weeks after the decision is notified. Check the instructions in your letter. State your name and address, the date, the contested decision and your reasons; sign a written objection. Submit it through the designated channel and keep proof of receipt. If documents are missing, seek advice in time about how to meet the deadline; a conversation or a new application does not replace your objection to the earlier decision.
5. Discuss acute need separately
The refusal remains in force during the objection procedure. If there is an imminent problem with meeting living expenses, contact the municipality and a legal adviser immediately. An interim measure can be requested from the administrative court if an objection or appeal is pending and there is an urgent interest. Explain specifically why you cannot wait, with evidence of available resources, necessary expenses and due liabilities. The court decides; temporary payment is not automatic. Legal costs may apply.
6. Follow the objection procedure and seek appropriate help
Respond to additional questions and prepare for any hearing. If your objection is rejected, you can generally appeal within six weeks; the decision states the correct route. A social welfare adviser or legal adviser can help you organise your facts and evidence. You can also use our help request form, but it does not suspend any deadline and does not submit an objection. List events and contacts. Note where you keep the evidence; no upload is needed.
What goes in my timeline?
Record what happened, when, the response and where to find the letter, message or photo. Mark uncertain dates.
Is my evidence sent?
No. You only note where it is kept. No files are uploaded or sent automatically.
How do I save my timeline?
Your entries are not saved automatically. Choose Save and continue later to store this preparation, including your timeline, in My overview. Wait for confirmation and save new changes again. You can also download a Word file without an account.

For each event, note the date, what happened and where the evidence is kept. Example: 3 October — letter received — correspondence folder.
Describe the solution you would like, such as an explanation of a deduction and repayment of the outstanding amount.
For example: which document is missing, who can provide it and what should I do first?
Record the date and its source. If unknown, note this and check promptly. This tool does not calculate or monitor deadlines.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to lodge an objection with UWV?
No, for a social assistance decision from the municipality, you lodge an objection with that municipality. Follow the submission method stated in the decision.
Is a new application enough to challenge the refusal?
No. A new application does not replace a timely objection to the earlier decision. Discuss both routes separately if your circumstances have changed.
Will lodging an objection immediately restore my income?
Not automatically. The refusal remains in force. Discuss acute need immediately and have it assessed whether, in addition to an objection, an interim measure is necessary and possible.
